Michael Rinaldi is on a mission.

The former Marine from Waterbury is passionate about his new cause: touting the benefits of a California table wine, called Jarhead Red. The wine was the brainchild of another former Marine, winemaker Adam Firestone.

Proceeds from the sale of the wine -- a sauvignon with a splash of Merlot -- benefit the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, which provides educational assistance to the children of fallen Marines.

Special attention is given to the children of Marines killed in action or on assignment.

Firestone's concept for Jarhead Red was more than philanthropic. It was personal. Firestone, who served as a Marine from 1984 to 1991, had recently lost a close friend in the military who left behind four children.

"This is real American," said Rinaldi as he read off the wine's impetus on the label of its handsome bottle. "Some people don't know where to donate" to aid U.S. troops, and now they can not only help out a good cause, but enjoy a fine wine at the same time, he said.

A bottle costs between $12 and $13. Initially, it was offered only through Firestone Vineyards in California, but because of its popularity, it is distributed at liquor outlets nationwide, including locations in Connecticut.

The wine is also available online at www.shopfirestone.com.
