Good Training and Good Health:
Henderson Hall's Wellness Program Kicks Off Six Week Walk to Fitness

Just as Marines firmly believe in Semper Fidelis and as surely as "Semper Fi" can be heard during greetings between Marines, Henderson Hall's Physical Fitness Director and Exercise and Training Program Manager Ron Hebb uses the motivating "Semper Sanus," meaning "always healthy," to promote participation in the Wellness Program.

"I chose Semper Sanus as the name for the Wellness Program because it is everything I believe in," said Hebb. "Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is very important and I enjoy sharing that information with others."

Hebb believes that for a person to be considered "fit," an individual must perform well in all of the components in the health-related spectrum of fitness. According to the President's Council of Physical Fitness and Sports, health-related physical fitness consists of those components of physical fitness that have a relationship with good health. The components are commonly defined as body composition, cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, muscular endurance, and strength.

In an effort to make people more health conscious, Hebb and Fitness/ Wellness Specialist Nichole O'Leary offer a variety of services for attached Henderson Hall Marines and their families, Civilian Marines and Department of Defense and Marine Corps Community Service employees.

"I want to encourage people to become more active in our Wellness Program," said Hebb. "I want them to be aware about where we are and let them know they have access to some good help."

To further facilitate Hebb's drive to encourage people to live a healthy lifestyle, the Semper Fit third annual Walk to Fitness, six-week walking program began on Monday. The motto is "Get Fit. Get Moving. Get Walking." The program's objective is based upon the theory that people can maintain a healthy lifestyle by taking ten-thousand steps every day.

"One of the great things about this program is that it is self-directed," said Hebb.

Hebb believes this program gives those who do not live in the barracks or close to base the opportunity to take advantage of some of the services. He also feels it gives him more of a chance to reach out to the civilians and the Marine families attached to Henderson Hall.

Participants in the program receive a walking booklet and a free pedometer. The walking booklet gives an overview of the program, a log sheet for walking and information on how one can reach the goal, ten-thousand steps a day.

"The pedometer is a great measurement tool," said O'Leary.

O'Leary believes that seeing the amount of steps one takes a day will encourage them to stay active, by parking there car farther away from their destination, or walking to someone's desk instead of calling them.

Find it hard to find time to exercise? According to the Sportline's guide to walking that comes with the pedometer "When you accomplish [ten-thousand steps a day], you will be burning more calories and walking your way to a healthier life."

Although calculating the amount of steps taken in a day gets the body moving, one must also think about their nutrition.

"If someone is looking to lose weight they must burn more calories than they take in," said Hebb.

In accordance to the six-week walking program, Semper Fit offers a host of classes and services that are open to Marines and Civilian Marines attached to Henderson Hall. In addition to the classes, Semper Sanus also offers a Martial Arts Program, medical exercise services and physical fitness services. Hebb and Gustafson recently completed training for stress testing using the Integrated Metabolic Exercise Testing and Training (iMETT) system. The iMETT system will assess a client's current and physical condition and exercise capacity which allows for maximum individualization of training programs.

O'Leary hopes participants stick with the 6 week program for the entire 6 weeks and looks forward to getting more people involved with all the programs Semper Fit offers.

"There will be prizes given for the six week walk so there are incentives to staying active," said O'Leary.
