Hello
First, please forgive me if this in inappropriate. I'm looking for information regarding MOS 5711. I am the mother of a Poolee leaving for PI this fall. He has chosen 5711 as his MOS. I have researched this quite thoroughly (about.com, etc.), but everything is in "Marine speak." I'm looking for something in plain English. What exactly IS NBC and is it being change to CBRN? What are possible careers once my son's duty if full-filled? Thanks for anything you can tell me.

Again, please forgive me if this is not appropriate. I'm still learning

Ah yes...5711..Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Warfare Defense Specialist. As an NBC Specialist he will learn operational aspects of NBC Agents. He will learn the differant types of Chemical Agents, thier effects etc. It is one of the few MOS's that require someone to be good at math, report writing and terrain analisis. With rank you usually find NBC Specialists in Command Elements (Battalion, Regiment or Division).

Wow -- plain English! ;) I understand now. Thanks so much. I still hope to hear from NBC Guru.

As a mom, I don't know if it is appropriate for me to post on this site. However, over the past couple of weeks as I have read different posts, I have found it to be very helpful (and in plain English) in understanding different aspects of the Marine Corps. What a concept -- by Marines for future Marines, not just a bunch of people trying to give information that comes from their experience as parents, girlfriends, etc. No fluff, just facts!

What a blessing y'all are! Yep, I'm from the South!

I don't remember. I do know that he was above for every MOS minimum requirement. The only things he didn't qualify for were jobs with height requirements -- my son is only 5 foot 4 1/2 inches. As we were giong over the lists, I pointed out to him that there were height requirments on the other end sometimes! He's not quite 20, so he may still grow a little bit. If he doesn't that's OK too!!! He doesn't have a problem with it.

Yes it is appropriate asking about ones family member. There is only a few places you can't post "For Marines only and it will let you know. Also even if you are a Marine you can't post in some news topics.

Good luck to you keep posting, keep asking!

I have no idea. Why all the questions? I assumed that the was the reason he took all these test to see where his strengths are.

All I know is that my son had a long list of "jobs" with explanations of what they were, what your scores had to be to qualify and so on. He had to come up with a list of 10 then narrow it down to three. He asked me to go over the list with him. So we talked about the future, as well as what he is interested in now. He came up with the following:

1. Engineering Assistant
2. NBC
3. Air Traffic Controller

Believe me NBC would NOT be on MY list for him, but then gunner and rifleman would not be there either. However, this was his decision so I support him in it.

He took it to his Recruiter who after a few days told him that there was no openings in EA, so his MOS would be his second choice -- NBC. A few days after that, my son signed papers regarding his MOS.

Look, I'm a single mom trying to support her only child in this life changing decision. I know nothing about the Marine Corps except what I've learned over the past month. That's why I'm here.

Would I have chosen a military career for him? No -- it scares me to death (read above ONLY CHILD). But it's not my decision to make. Once he made the decision, I have never tried to talk him out of it. It is my choice to support him. I couldn't be any other way. Although his dad has been in his life, I have practically raised him by myself with help from the men of our church, friends, as well as different coaches over the years. It my opinion and support my son wants, not his dads. That's why he asked the Recruiter to come to my house.

I dont really think it is your place to make that comment. My cousin in law was raised by her mother as her father died when she was a baby, people are single parents for all reasons. Some people arent even raised by their parents, but if they are doing a good job who are you to make that comment. Are you even a parent?

Thanks y'all!!!

I certainly won't dignify his question with an answer!

Just be sure -- MY child would never be so disrepectful! Some of us lowlife single mothers aren't lowlife single mothers at all!!!! Oh yea, and we weren't teenage mothers either nor never married to the dad (yes single -- just one dad). And it all makes us better and stronger!

Welcome aboard! Its great to see you take such an interest in your son's life. Be sure to encourage him to visit us here at Leatherneck. We have hundreds of years of combined knowledge and experience. And in our Marine Corps tradition we make it our job to pass it along.

When I was on active dury, I worked with a Cpl who was an 0141 and when he joined he requested Engineers as he ran Heavy Equipment as a civilian. The Marine Corps was short on Engineers and needed Heavy Equipment Operators, but low and behold they made him into a clerk. Maybe the powers to be saw something that I did not. (But is is not the 1st time someone ended up in the wrong MOS and will not be the last)
