Marine jet involved in N.Y. runway mishap

Associated Press

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — A military jet arriving at Long Island’s Republic Airport on Friday struck and damaged equipment housed at the end of the runway, an airport spokesman said. No one was hurt.

The single-engine jet was one of two planes operated by the Marine Corps that were approaching the airport as part of routine maneuvers in the New York area, spokesman Gary Lewi said.

The jet struck the instrument landing system, which guides airplane pilots during landing.

The equipment is housed in a trailer at the foot of the runway, Lewi said. The plane stayed within the airport’s perimeter, but a road that surrounds the airport was closed for several hours, he said.

The runway would remain closed until the jet was removed, Lewi said.

Marine Corps spokesman Jay Delarosa said he was looking into the matter and could not immediately provide details.
