Waikiki Ready to Salute Our Troops

WAIKIKI (KHNL) - More than 20,000 are expected to celebrate and salute Hawaii troops Saturday in Waikiki. the celebration, which is free for everybody is being put on by U.S.O. Hawaii. It's a non-profit organization that helps boost morale for military personnel and their families.
Russ Hoyelman is getting ready to literally feed an army of people. "We'll probably serve about a thousand of the troops" says Hoyelman.
He is one of the 40-vendors volunteering their services to salute the troops.
"They sacrificed a lot by going overseas and doing their duty for their country. So were doing what little bit what we can help," says Hoyelman.
He says doesn't mind all this hard work.
"I remember when i was in the service, we could have used something like this. That was in 1962. There was nothing like this for us," says Hoyelman.
More than 5,000 Hawaii troops will march through Waikiki in a parade Saturday morning.
"The parade has all service components, including the Coast Guard, Army, the Navy, the Air Force, Marines, and the Coast Guard. And we also have about 300 veterans from World War II, Vietnam War, the Korean War," says Cassandra Isidrio of USO Hawaii.
Following the parade, there's going to be a concert and festival. A 40-foot tall stage is being constructed to accommodate the performers and entertainers.
"We have Kapena, we have Makaha Sons, and we have Seminole County which is a mainland rock group. And our headliner is John Legend, at 3:30pm. He is a recent three-time Grammy winner," says Isidrio.
This event will give everyone a chance to come out and pay tribute to the men and women in uniform who have served us in this time of war.
"It'll make them feel like they're appreciated. That's what this is all about," says Hoyelman.
The parade begins at 9:30am from Fort DeRussy through Kalakaua Avenue ending at the Waikiki Shell parking lot at Kapi'olani park. If you're planning on going down there, you can park at Kapi'olani Community College. Shuttles will be running every 15 minutes.
