Navy Marine Corps Intranet users who have not updated their common access card, or military identification cards, with their personalized pin number for Cryptographic Log On enablement might be surprised when they try to log on to the network.

The CLO is part of an overall effort referred to as Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).

“PKI improves security on the network with the following key benefits: It assures that a person or system is exactly who or what they claim to be through authentication. It also assures that transmitted data has not been altered through data integrity,” said Maj. Michael M. Cho, deputy G-6, 1st Marine Logistics Group.

“CLO protects against a person denying later that a communication or transaction took place as recorded through non-repudiation. And it protects against the disclosure of information to unauthorized users through confidentiality,” stated Cho.

All NMCI account users must update their ID cards. Updating of ID cards will be enforced for all Marines through an alphabetical timeline, which begins May 5 and ends June 30.

“All Marines with the last name A or B (and an NMCI account) will be required to log on via CLO May 5,” said Cho.

Updating can only be done at a DEERS, a database record containing identity information, ID center. There are three centers located here on base.

“At the Joint Reception Center located in the Mainside area, the Telaga Center, Reserve Support Unit, ID center in Camp Telega (64 area), and the Main Gate are qualified to update ID cards,” explained Jeremy D. Shadburn, the site security manager for the Joint Reception Center.

Centers are open from Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m, 3:30 p.m., work hours will be determined by customer volume, with the exception of the Telaga center, which is open Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Lunch hours are high volume times for all centers.

“Although it only takes 5-7 minutes to update a card, situations have begun to occur that make the process take much longer,” stated Shadburn.

Lines are long, and the wait time for updating is even longer.

“There have been many incidents where Marines have forgotten their new pin number and had to re-update their ID cards. This has caused volume to increase,” said Shadburn.

The Main Gate will take scheduled appointments for units consisting of 10 or more Marines.

For more information, call the Joint Reception Center at (760) 725-2106, the Telaga Center at (760) 763-3632 and the Main Gate at (760) 725-2633.
