MARINE CORPS RECRUIT DEPOT SAN DIEGO, Calif.(April 14, 2006) -- A special promotion is in place providing a discount for depot personnel and families in need of a vehicle to use for recreation, business or emergency.
Flexcar, a car-sharing public transit provider, has designated a $9 per-hour rate, which includes insurance coverage, fuel and designated parking for active duty members, family members and civilians assigned to the depot.
Flexcar is a fleet of low-emission vehicles including gas and electric hybrids, pickup trucks and minivans located throughout seven major metro areas that are rented out to members on an hourly basis.
Car sharing reduces road congestion and pollution because fewer cars are used, according to the Flexcar brochures. It also creates space because fewer parking spaces are needed for fewer cars, using less concrete and leaving more open area.
Currently, the two Flexcar vehicles here are parked in front of the Marine Corps Community Services Center and the Marketplace. The hybrid vehicles are fuel efficient and environmentally friendly. The depot can expect more recreationally focused vehicles here soon, according to Matt Enos, development director for Flexcar.
Enos said he plans to bring a Jeep Wrangler to the depot along with a Honda Element.
“We really care about our customers,” said Enos. “We make sure that everyone can get a trip in in a timely manner, especially if they need to.”
The special promotion code for active duty members and civilian personnel is V75EAGLE, and the special promotion code for family members is MCRDFAM.
Monthly rate programs are available based on the average hours used during the month and there is a one-time, $35 application fee and a $40 annual membership fee. The new member is processed and receives a Flexcar KeyCard that can be used to open any of the previously reserved Flexcar vehicles.
Enos encourages family members attending graduation to register with Flexcar seven to 10 days before arriving at the depot so their membership can be processed and they can receive their cards. After they reserve a vehicle, families will be able to use the Flexcar for traveling around San Diego and can even take it overnight if they stay in a local hotel.
