Marines will have more flexibility to manage their own careers after a new Internet-based program on Marine Online becomes effective April 1.

The Automated Career Retention System is a Web-based retention system that will replace the total force retention system currently in-use for submission of reenlistments, extensions and lateral moves by enlisted Marine and commands.

The ACRS will allow Marines, career retention specialists and commanding officers to interact with each other through an interview management system as part of the first phase. Marines can set up interviews while the career retention specialist and commanding officer can conduct the interviews via the new program.

Staff Sgt. Jason F. Steadman, the assistant operations chief for the Enlisted Retention and Counseling section for the Personnel Management Division at Headquarters Marine Corps, came to Okinawa to prepare Marines to use the newest program added to MOL.

The ACRS is not designed to downsize the Career Retention Specialist billet, but to make things run more accurately.

The systems that career retention specialists have been using varied and did not always keep up with the Marines’ information, according to Steadman. The new system will eliminate those problems and will make it easier for Marines and career retention specialists to track their careers.

The second phase of ACRS, which will not be initiated until January 2007, will allow Marines to research and submit reenlistment packages, make a dream list of duty stations, and submit requests for extensions and special duty assignments.

“Although both phases are not set up yet, the interview management system currently allows Marines, career retention specialists and commanding officers to help advance a Marine’s career, with Marines researching both re-enlistment and career information,” Steadman said.

Until the second phase of the program becomes effective in January, Marines can only notify their CRSs about their duty station preferences and needs and benefits in the Marine Corps.

Marines from I Marine Expeditionary Force started using this new system in April to work out any potential kinks in the system, according to Steadman.

Any Marine with an established MOL account will have access to ACRS. To access ACRS, log onto MOL and click on the “Resources” page, and click “ACRS” at the top.
