Bill Sparks DSM .(Distinguished Service Medal) Died Sat 30th Nov. 2002 Last surviving member of the 10 men, known as the 'Cockleshell Heroes' who attacked German shipping in the Gironde estuary, Bordeaux, France during WW2. 12th December 2002 is the 60th anniversary.
After the attack Bill (Marine) and Major Blondie Haslar evaded capture and aided by the resistance walked 100 miles to the Spanish border, returning to the UK 4 months later.
