Four military fliers enter NASA astronaut corps

A test pilot, a Navy SEAL, a veteran of combat air patrols over Iraq and an Apache pilot took their place among NASA’s 11 newest astronauts. The four service members, representing the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps, were introduced with their classmates on Feb. 13 in Houston.

Here is a look at NASA’s newest military astronauts:

• Marine Corps Lt. Col. Randolph J. Bresnik, a test pilot based in San Diego, is approaching 3,000 flight hours, including a recent tour in Iraq. Bresnik, 38, grew up in California and has a master’s degree in aviation systems from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

• Navy Lt. Cmdr. Christopher J. Cassidy, a mission specialist, a SEAL, recently returned from a second tour in Afghanistan. He has a master’s degree in ocean engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The 35-year-old grew up in Maine. He is married with three children.

• Air Force Maj. James P. Dutton, a pilot, based at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. He flew combat air patrols over northern Iraq during the 1990s. He has degrees from the Air Force Academy and the University of Washington. The 37-year-old, who grew up in Oregon and first wanted to become an astronaut in middle school, is married with three sons.

• Army Lt. Col. Robert S. Kimbrough, a mission specialist and Johnson Space Center engineer, went to high school in Georgia and later attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering. Kimbrough, 38, went on to receive his master’s degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He flew Apache helicopters during the Gulf War in 1991. He is married with three children.

Joining the four are: Joseph M. Acaba, Richard R. Arnold II, Jose M. Hernandez, Thomas H. Marshburn, Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger, Robert L. Satcher Jr., and Shannon Walker, all civilians.
