Rdy2gopoolie,

As one who was in the aviation field, Aviation Operations, it will all depend on the unit that you are assigned to and what their mission is. Chances are being in the aviation field, you will be going overseas for at least six months at a time. At least that was how it was when I was in. As far as carrier duty, it again depends on the unit and mission. Hope that helps.

You will be assigned to your unit as you get close to graduating from your MOS school. They will not assign you unitl they are sure that you will complete the training. You will be asked sometime early in your training to fill out your "dreamsheet", an area you would like to go to, i.e., east coast, west coast, etc., but it all comes down to you applying yourself in school and completing you basic MOS qualifications.

I am no longer in the Corps. Got out in '87. I was Avation Operations, as I said. We were tasked with providing routes in and routes out of the requested areas and letting the pilots know where they could pick up their beacons so they knew and we knew, if they were on course or not.

if they were on course or not LOL Got to keep those Captains and LTs happy! Even with millions of dollars of the latest Raytheon navigation equipment, human confirmation is still invaluable.

Rdy2gopoolie, I bet if you got assigned to an AV8 Harrier squardron you'd most certainly get aboard LHA ship during your first enlistment.

Then there is always the B Billet of becoming a Sea Duty Marine!

Is that the the militarys version of a civilian airline dispatcher?

Sea Duty is one of those career enhancing B Billets like Embassy Duty and the Drill Field. Sea Duty Marines provide security for ships. When battleships were still in service, Marines staffed some of their guns.

It is one of the original duties of the Marine Corps since 1775.

I may be mistaken, but I think that they have done away with the SEAOPDETS. BTW I have 7 cruises under my belt, be careful what you wish for, you just might get it!!

lol how were they? what kindve things does that entail? that would be a bummer if they have indeed done away with them. is there anyother way to go on ship deployments other then a harrier squadron? thanks.

SEA OP DETs were for ships security, like embassy duty only on the water. I have never been with a Harrier squadron, two cruises with Hornets and five with helo's.
Haze gray and underway!!!

No all over the world, thats probably the best part. Two Meds, 1 N.Atlantic, 1 Carribean, and three West Pac.

No more Sea Duty!! That's a dang shame, Sir. :(

One of our Drill Instructors served Sea Duty. The afternoon that we had the Period of Instruction for proper Dress Blues, he walked into the squad bay in his Dress Blues Bravos. We were immediately awed and instantly re-motivated to Earn The Title!

We had our first glimpse of Perfection.

Yes, Yellowwing, I'm pretty sure they are all gone. I also got my first glimpse of the Marine Corps on the USS Enterprise when I was about 15. The Marines used to run the brig on the ships that they had dets on. I was quite impressed with the Corporal that was escorting the prisoners to chow. That was when I realized that I wanted to be a Marine, and have never looked back. Your right about that first glimpse of perfection.

Sorry it took so long to reply, I've been out for a couple of days. To answer your question no it isn't. It entails receiving a flight plan/request. We would go over the plan, ensure that is is safe, mark the location of beacons and reference markers for the pilots, and pass this info onto flight ops. This way the Air Traffic Control personnel will know where the aircraft is at all times. It also comes into play when an aircraft goes down. We would be notified of their last position, and would be able to assist rescue operations in locating the downed aircraft based on their last known location, and when they should have hit the next marker. Hope that clears it up a little bit for you. Not a glamourous job, but esstential to the safety of our pilots and aircraft.
