ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) _ Teddy Pataki, the eldest son of Gov. George Pataki, has deferred his entrance into law school and is headed for active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Teddy Pataki was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps earlier this year after completing 10 weeks of Marine Corps training in 2004.
In his State of the State speech Wednesday, the governor extended his thanks to New York military personnel who served in the Middle East while noting he was "the proud father of a Marine Corps second lieutenant."
The 23-year-old, who was accepted to Fordham Law School in New York City, recently left for Quantico, Va. for training.
"I think any parent would be nervous, but I'm proud," Pataki told The Associated Press.
Earlier this year, Teddy Pataki graduated from Yale University, his father's alma mater.
The governor, who went on to Columbia Law School, did not serve in the military. He said he had a medical deferment during the Vietnam War because of poor eyesight.
