SAN DIEGO - U.S. Marine Corps officials today released the name of a 30-year-old Marine staff sergeant who died after a water-survival swimming drill at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego.

Staff Sgt. Andrew Jason Gonzales of Brazoria, Texas, was undergoing water survival instructor training when he collapsed just after 7:30 a.m. yesterday, according to Marine Corps Maj. Joseph Kloppel.

Gonzales died a short time later at Scripps Mercy Hospital, Kloppel said. An autopsy is pending, he said.

Gonzales, who joined the Marine Corps in October 1998, was a drill instructor with Company B, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, Kloppel said. He is survived by his wife. CNS-08-2-2005 09:12
