Second Thoughts 9-8-04

Some school boards - Rose Tree Media comes to mind - beat the Act 72 requirement concerning referendums on large tax hikes by approving money for teacher contract extensions at special meetings before the Sept. 3 deadline.

It just highlights the importance of school board elections. Unless you are or have a close family member who is a teacher, the smart voter should always vote the candidate opposed by the educrat organizations.

Former Delco resident Bob Surrick sent us a fax on how physicians from the Neurology Center are no longer available to cover inpatients at Harrisburg Hospital. The reason? Malpractice insurance coverage.
Tort reform must be a priority for all thinking Pennsylvania legislators. Granted, that species may not exist.

I enjoyed the Republican Convention. The pundits, including left-wing, liberal Chris Matthews, said President Bush made an excellent speech.
One of the convention highlights, for me, came when the bombastic Matthews and Senator Zell Miller (D-Ga.) entered into a raucous debate.
Matthews tried to use his bullying tactics on Miller. He did his usual ask a question, let a couple words come out and then interrupt with another question.
When he tried that on Miller, Matthews was taken to the woodshed.
At one point Miller was reciting the poem -- "It Is The Soldier" -- that Matthews did not recognize and he interrupted Miller.
Father Denis Edward O'Brien, USMC, a Guadalcanal Veteran of WWII, 11th Marines and Chaplain for the 1st Marine Division Association wrote the poem. It goes like this:
It Is The Soldier, not the reporter, who has given US Freedom of the press
It Is The Soldier, not the poet, who has given US Freedom of speech
It Is The Soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given US the Freedom to demonstrate
It Is The Soldier, not the lawyer, who has given US the right to a fair trial
It is the Soldier, who saluted the Flag, who serves beneath the Flag and whose coffin is draped by the Flag, who allows the protester to burn the Flag.
A pundit noted that Senator Miller served in the U. S. Marines and Matthews served in the Peace Corps.

There was also this conversation between Miller and Matthews:
Matthews: Do you believe, Senator, truthfully, that John Kerry wants to defend the country with spitballs? Do you believe that?
Miller: That was a metaphor, wasn't it? Do you know what a metaphor is?
Matthews: Well, what do you mean by a metaphor?
Wow! Those LaSalle High School grads sure are sophisticated, aren't they?
For all you Philly folks, Matthews went to LaSalle.

Senator Miller is not the only Democrat voting for Bush. Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch said he would also cast his ballot for the President.
Why?
"I cannot support John Kerry, the Democratic candidate, because he wavers too much on issues of fundamental importance."

The latest Kerry-Edwards joke going around has the two candidates campaigning at a McDonald's. An excited employee accidentally spills some hot coffee on Kerry's hand. Edwards wants to sue, but Kerry wants to write it up for his fourth Purple Heart.

The New York Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, Boston Globe, Newsweek, Time, the Alphabet TV stations and the rest of what used to be the Main Stream Media have taken a real beating.
They tried to spike the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth story but the new media, Fox Television, talk radio and the Internet alerted citizens in every hamlet in the United States, that Sen. Kerry, a Vietnam veteran and distinguished anti-war protestor, was not being completely honest about things that were seared in his memory.
Kerry's spinmeisters have admitted the swift boat critics were right about Christmas in Cambodia, and the Kerry campaign has said it is possible his first Purple Heart was awarded for an unintentional self-inflicted wound - just as the swift boat critics alleged in their book.
The so-called main stream media was finally forced to use the story after sitting on it for about two weeks.
Kerry has gone from "Bring It On" to please make them stop!

It's really time for Kerry to step up and show some leadership. Just sign form 180 and put an end to this.

Meanwhile the Swiftees, unless they get a sincere apology from Kerry, will continue to run their ads. John O' Neill, who took over command of Kerry's swift boat when Kerry left, said, "We are not GOP shills; President Bush can't stop us from telling the truth about John Kerry."
