QUANTICO, Va. (March 15, 2004) -- 2nd Lt. Kristen Kavanaugh and Master Sgt. Michael Kidd have been selected as the U.S. Marine Corps Female and Male Athletes Of The Year for 2003. The pair will be honored at the Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame Induction Luncheon Ceremony at the Clubs at Quantico in Quantico. The ceremony is tentatively scheduled for August 2004.

Kavanaugh is assigned to the AC/S Comptroller's office for Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 3, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif. She is currently forward deployed to Iraq.

In 2003, Kavanaugh distinguished herself as a member of the All-Marine and Armed Forces Women's Basketball Team. During her collegiate career, she was a four-year member of the Navy women's basketball team, lettering three times. She served as team captain in her final season of 2001-02. She is ranked 15th in Navy history for career three-point field goal percentage with a mark of 30.5% (18-59).

Kidd is assigned to Headquarters, Headquarters Squadron at MCAS Miramar. Kidd distinguished himself as a world champion power lifter while representing the United States Marine Corps at the Amateur Athletic Union National Power Lifting Championships held June 7 and 8, 2003, in Richmond.

He competed in the 198 lb. Weight class, winning first place in all six divisions, which included the Open, Military, and Masters Divisions. Kidd also won first place in all six divisions, while setting a new American Record at the AAU National Bench Press and Dead Lift Championships held June 21 and 22, 2003, in Vista, Calif.

Both National Championships qualified him to become a member of the Team USA at the World Power Lifting Championships held in early November in Richmond. With teams and competitors from fourteen different countries represented, Kidd won first place gold medals in four divisions and set a new world record in the Military Division. He is a three time overall Power Lifting Champion at NAWS China Lake. He is also a three time Athlete of the Year at MCAS Miramar. Kidd was also the Fire Officer of the Year for the Marine Corps in 2001 and has been nominated for 2003.
