SgtOfMarines,
I'm pushing towards 59.
I don't run for time. I just run (more like jog) to run (jog).
I can't stand running or jogging around a track.
My hat's off to all of you.

I look forward to meeting you. Give me a couple of days to get the house "squared away" and all of my running shoes put away.
LOL

A good friend of mine, who was with Recon in Beruit, also lives in Sunrise. Maybe you gents know one another.

showershoe26,
There are also some neat campsites around that area. Say hello to your father for me and best wishes to you on your quest to become a U.S. Marine.

showershoe26,

My son was 25 in October, shipped the following March. His run time was about 10 minutes, and it improved a lot...courtesy of the Drill Instructors, lol.

One of his advantages - according to him - was a higher level of maturity making him able to do his studying better than some of the younger recruits, and to be able to handle some of the other things a bit better. He was also able to help some of the teens to handle to boot camp stress a bit better.

His one problem? He got the nickname "Pappy" from some of his younger platoon members - and if he runs into them now, he is still called that.... not a bad thing.... but embarrassing, according to him, to have it shouted at you from 10 feet away as you head into the chow hall, lol.

I just turned 23 myself. Definitely wish I followed up on the recruiters back when I was still 18, but I guess it took me this long before I realized this is what I want to do.

I joined after college @ 22 and felt down right elderly compared to the 17 and 18 y/olds around me. In retrospect I think it was good for me to go later because at 18 I don't know if I had the maturity to follow through. Maybe the DI's would have brought it out of me... who knows?

Showershoe,
Get a pair of Nikes. I think those showershoes are the problem!
Seriously, get into the best shape you can. Run and PT untill you cant do anymore, then do some more. It pays.
I've been out of the Corps for over 30 years but still remember the pain of going into Boot Camp out of shape.
