Retired Army (http://www.military.com/army) Col. Douglas Macgregor, newly-appointed as a senior adviser at the Pentagon, has a track record of making controversial statements. But his most provocative of all might be a proposal to do away with the U.S. Marine Corps.
In a 2012 opinion piece for Time Magazine (https://nation.time.com/2012/12/03/usmc-under-utilized-superfluous-military-capability/), Macgregor, a decorated veteran of the Gulf War, argued that the Corps was living on its past glories and was unsuited for combat on today's battlefield, with the possible exception for pushover enemies.

He went further, too, suggesting the acronym "USMC" should really stand for "Under-utilized Superfluous Military Capability."
"Most of today's Marine force consists of airmobile light infantry," Macgregor wrote. "This Marine force is designed for use in the developing world against incapable opponents from Haiti to Fiji, but not much else."

Retired Army Col. Douglas Macgregor. (BMG-2048/Wikimedia Commons)

He took exception to previous remarks from then-Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James Amos on the future of the Corps as "America's shock force" of agile and adaptable units vital to the nation's defense against evolving threats.
Macgregor summed up Amos' assessment this way: "Rah, rah, the Marine Corps is awesome, and all we have to do is make sure they have the equipment & training & facilities they need so they can always be awesome Marines, rah, rah!"
"Wrong," said Macgregor. "The Marines as currently organized and equipped are about as relevant as the Army's horse cavalry in the 1930s."
Macgregor, who has a reputation as an iconoclastic thinker on military strategy and tactics, was brought on as a senior adviser at the Pentagon by new Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller, who was named to the post by President Donald Trump after he fired Defense Secretary Mark Esper via a Twitter post.
The Pentagon announced Wednesday that Macgregor "will be serving as a Senior Advisor to the Acting Secretary of Defense. Mr. MacGregor's decades of military experience will be used to assist in the continued implementation of the president's national security priorities."
Macgregor, a frequent guest on Fox News, has argued for the imposition of martial law at the U.S.-Mexico border with orders for troops to "shoot people" if necessary to stop illegal immigration.
He has also criticized European countries for being too welcoming to "Muslim invaders."
There is a historical precedent for arguing to disband the Marine Corps. Presidents Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower both attempted to do away with the amphibious service. But these arguments have always been brushed aside by furious pushback from the Marines and their allies in Congress.
The enduring future of the Marine Corps was seen from a Navy ship offshore of Iwo Jima by then-Navy Secretary James Forrestal in February 1945.
When he saw the flag go up atop Mount Suribachi, Forrestal said that "means a Marine Corps for the next 500 years."
Retired Marine Lt. Col. Dakota Wood, senior fellow at the conservative Heritage Foundation think tank, said Macgregor's new Pentagon assignment is likely a non-issue for the Marine Corps.
"I do not think it will cause any notable problems," Wood said.
In the short time before the inauguration of the next president, "there isn't any opportunity to make significant changes to the [National Defense Authorization Act] or any key documents that would materially affect the Corps," Wood said.
"Plus," he said, "the Corps is well-supported in Congress and any big changes in role, funding or programs would be driven from there."

I don't know what's worse- Macgregor's idea, or the current direction of the Corps under this commandant.

Typical propaganda from an Army Veteran that fought in a 45 day War.....where after the Air Campaign and the Armour Assault, all the enemy surrendered. Even President Truman, who hated the Corps, praised us as "Over paid, over sexed, professional killers". The truth hurts those who are living a lie.

Truman should have said; "Under paid, over sexed, professional killers." It's been a great life.

getting rid of our Corps is a non-starter issue... to do so, there would have to be a change in the National Security Act of 1947, which defines the exact duties and responsibilities of each branch of the service... and the Army's job, and the Corps' job are different.... the Army tried to sneak in the back door to assume some of the Corps' responsibilities, when it created the "DELTA force", but they screwed the pooch on that one, because it's not a combined arms force... and now the current commandant is trying to get away from the very concept that keeps our Corps unique and multi mission capable.... maybe HE bears watching, along with the azzhole that wants to disband us.... real "hot warrior", him... failed the General exam for the Army.... must not have been as hot as he thought he was...

I'd take the job, Dave, but the "mothers of America" would go ape $hit BEZERK......their poor little darlings would start getting the kind of training that REAL MARINES of the past got, and that includes marches through the swamp, along with more "hands on" training, along with plenty of "live fire exercises"... PLUS, "boot camp" would go back to being "stand alone" training, followed by ITR, AIT, and MOS specific training, each a "separate entity"....

William, back in 67 our DI's ran us through the swamp 2 times to show us that only non hackers could't do it. Of course they told us to keep our mouths shut.

Russ, please don't start that insane bullshet about those swamps and sand fleas. Hell, ya'll lived in Barracks with heat in the Winter. It was so easy, even the Women took their Bootcamp there. It embarrasses me to hear those PI Marines crying about those vicious sand fleas eating them up. Shet, you would have thought they were 6 ft. long and had 6 in. fangs, the way ya'll cry about them. Then comes running through a swamp.....holy Hell, Russ, give us a break. People been living in swamps and hunting in Swamps and kids been playing in Swamps for hundreds of years. Then here comes a PI Marine bawling because those old meanie D.I.'s made them run through the Swamp.....Lord, Lord please help them to recover from the trauma of having to go through what MCRD Marines went through just to get to the Head.

got to agree with Billy on this one... and don't forget Russ, I live in "swamp country"... unlike sunny Florida, where you have the everglades, here, the whole damn state is a swamp....

I actually didn't mind the swamps, at least we didn't have to drink the water there; of course next to the paddies in the Nam it would have been a much higher quality. And y'all need to remember, as a grunt it's part of my MOS and my very being to bittch at everything.

In the Police Academy when I got home, my best friend was another Marine from the 9th Regiment. When they'd be PTing us and everybody was moaning and groaning my friend would look back at me with a big ****t-eatting grin because to us that PTing was nothing.

When I was at Pendleton we stayed in the "huts" and I thought they were quite nice as we all had one of those private rooms with room service and a bar in the center. The sunglasses though were overrated being military grade. I especially enjoyed those walks in the park going up that Mt. MF'r (I'll never understand why they called it that). I also enjoyed the weekend cookouts and the beach parties at that quaint little town of Oceanside with all the friendly folks there.

TOOK ya long enough, Ed... ANOTHER of Eleanor's quotes about the Corps, and Marines in general:

“The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!”

It was Eleanor Roosevelt who made the "oversexed" comment.

Don't pay much attention to MacGregor. He's a publicity wh*re who likes to shoot his mouth off. There'd be a sh*tstorm of public outrage if anybody seriously attempted to disband the Corps...and it would be a career-ender for any politician who supported it.

The Corps is still the relevant force of readiness, with self-sustaining MEUs afloat in every ocean and available for immediate combat or rescue operations anywhere.

F*ck that idiot.

I believe the Marines should all get back to the US and defend us from the United Nations force that is coming to take the 2nd amendment away from us.

MacGregor is trying to "justify" the Army's "Delta Farce" as the country's premiere "force in readiness"... unfortunately, as they showed in Mogadishu, they "aren't ready to be Marines" yet.... Not to take anything away from their performance there, but the Marine force that preceded them in that hellhole had NO trouble with the warlords... it was not until the MC pulled out and the DF took over that the trouble started... shows the POWER of "combined arms" (and the REPUTATION of the USMC)...The "Delta Force" proved to be "too lightweight" to be America's "Force In Readiness"....

Moxee, if the UN proves to be stupid enough to send a force to the US under whatever pretext, it will surely be "game on" and "open season" on BLUE HELMETS, NO LIMIT, and NO LICENSE REQUIRED...

Number one....there are enough Armed Veterans and gun owners just in Texas to Whoop the U.N.'s Azz. They are the most over rated Military force ever created. Daughters of the American Revolution could out fight 'em.http://www.leatherneck.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=34044&stc=1

I agree, but the democrats have nothing, and they are only 20% of America, and this is the only way they (demos) can have there war, because Americans will not put a beed on other Americans.

I'm not too sure about that one, ANTIFA and BLM have certainly shown no restraint when it comes to killing, or trying to kill other Americans that refuse to follow their "doctrine"... and I have none when it comes o the protection of myself, my friends, or family.....
