View Full Version : Promotion system ?

I did research on the matter but I did not find an answer to this, as always I fall back to leatherneck.
If I enlist with 40 college credits, I have been told I will get in with e-2 (Recruit none the less in Bootcamp). I was wondering,
would those 40 college credits escort me my whole service towards my cutting scores for promotion ?
For example, as an EMT (6 College Credits FYI) would that always give me an edge on other Marines for promotion ?
Or will it reset every time and I need to start from Zero ?
I understand that there are other elements to this besides for college credits, but say all is equal between me and my buddies but I happen to still have those 40 college credits from the last promotion, will I still get promoted with those 40 college credits in mind ?

I should have kept it simple. Even if I have 100 college credits when I enlist does it count throughout my service towards promotion ? Or does it get DQ'd for promotion points once I got rank ? Thanks again. Yahoo doesn't seem to have answers and I can't find an article clearly explaining the system.

No, college credits only count towards promotion/your composite score during that promotion period.

Eg. You turn in college credits as a LCpl. for points towards Corporal, as soon as you pin Cpl those points go away. You'd have to turn in more as a Cpl towards Sgt.

They stay in your education record though which looks good when/if you are eligible for meritorious boards, Marine of Quarter boards, special duty/training, Staff NCO, etc....

There are other education points that count towards promotion besides just college credits. You can also complete correspondence courses through the Marine Corps Institute online. Many of them like "punctuation", "spelling", "math for Marines", etc. are super easy and can completed quickly.
