You have to go on a deployment, AR, or some sort of active duty orders for a year or more.

You must be on active duty orders for at least 90 days to be eligible. However you will not receive full benefits unless you served for 36 month or get service connected disability after serving 30 continuous days on active duty. The rates based on how long you served is here:

The active duty orders must be orders to support operations (deployment or CONUS) or be on active reserve orders. Active Duty Special Work may or may not count depending on the nature of the work.

Your initial active duty training, drills and annual training do not count.
