We don't get upset if you don't call us "SIR" or "Ma'am", just as long as you use our rank (unless we tell you it's ok to use our name).
In some cases, when I do address enlisted Marines here and elsewhere as sir or ma'am, they're usually not impressed. Sometimes even annoyed. They basically tell me not to address them as such again. I know for members of the Armed Forces, sir and ma'am are reserved for officers but I don't get why a civilian shouldn't address an enlisted person as such.
