When elements of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit left Camp Lejeune Tuesday for a six-month deployment, the Marines and sailors were able to take something along for the ride.
New York Port Authority Police Capt. David Hanna and Lt. Barry Pikaard joined the 24th MEU Tuesday morning at Risley Pier to present a white flag with an artist’s rendition of the World Trade Center superimposed on American flag. The Marines immediately hoisted it above an M1A1 Abrams tank before heading out to the amphibious assault ships USS Kearsarge, USS Tortuga and USS Austin for the journey to the Mediterranean.
