Hello, My name is Brandon Rogers, Son of Bradley A. Rogers of the United States Marine Corps... As the title says I do need to lose weight in order to enlist. I am currently enrolled in high school. I am 16 years of age and weigh 250 pounds( I know, WAY TO DAMN MUCH) I am also only 5'8 so i do know I am over weight. I am also in weight lifting class hoping that would have helped, it did as far as build up my strength but as far as my bmi or my "body image" I am still not in shape. So my question is what are some very big KEY steps in getting rid of my gut and also losing the weight i need to? Anybody who can help such as current Marines and Retired Marines and so on, the advice of people wanting to see others reach their goals would really be taken in... I have also started cutting back on my eating and a recruiter has recommended the H.I.I.T workout but I feel that as of now my fitness as in running is very bad.

Brandon....Yes, this is the Ask A Marine forum and we are here to answer your questions, but after a while, we see the same questions be asked over and over and over again without a search being done "first" before posting.
You will find that by doing a search here on Leatherneck, there are topics on here with some helpfull tips, as well as doing a search on the internet.

Good luck to you!

Brandon, this comes up a lot. Search the Ask a Marine forum. Yesterday the same type question was asked at: http://www.leatherneck.com/forums/showthread.php?t=108298

This one was on 12-20: http://www.leatherneck.com/forums/showthread.php?t=107643&highlight=weight Check it out for good links.

Here is another: http://www.leatherneck.com/forums/showthread.php?t=106963&highlight=weight

Google it. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=How+can+a+16+year+old+male+lose+weight%3F

Lot's of good stuff. Weightlifting will build muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat. Change to cardioaerobic work such as running, swimming, bike riding, and do light lifting in order to get lean muscle mass and not bulk.

Check out the links. On one of those threads I posted a link that is a weight calculator where you enter your age, etc., how many pounds you want to lose, and it will tell you how many calories you can consume to get there.

Good profile BTW. Let us know how it goes.

I know this is a well known question that is asked on a daily... but the reason I asked it once more is because of the simple fact that I am dead set on joining the finest branch in military history, the United States Marine Corps. My life has been based on the military, my father, uncles, grandparents, great grandparents, and so on have all been in some kind of military branch. So I just had to ask this question just one more time.

BTW, you PM'd me asking about necessity of why the need for filling out profiles and what we "get" out of a profile.

One, site rules. One wanting to be a Marine needs to learn to follow rules.
Two, many come on posing as wannabes, future poolees, and do not fill out the profile.
Three, my comment above regarding your profile was that it was good to see someone actually following the rules, rather than posting and being told to do so. Doesn't happen often.

well thank you, and like I said in the PM I was seeing people telling others to feel out the profile... was just wondering why... But thank you for the compliment following directions... rather do it right the first time and get it done than half ass

At 5'8" 250 you have a LONG way to go. It is possible, but it takes an honest hardworking commitment.

It takes sacrifice - how bad do you want it and how much are you willing to sacrifice to get it. Nothing worth anything comes free or easy.

But really, losing weight isn't rocket science -- it is a simple function of taking in less than you burn, or burning more than you take in.

You just have to do it, talking about it is cheap -- just do it.

Good luck
