View Full Version : Choosing MOS (computer related)

So, as I have recently DEPed in (20110316), I'm looking to choose my MOS. I scored an 84 on the ASVAB. I myself am very interested in computers, namely fixing them. Whatever my MOS ends up being, I'm just hoping it deals with computers in some fashion.

Out of the researching I've done, I've found 3 MOS that seem to deal with computers and the networking thereof:

MOS 2847: Telephone Systems/PersonalComputer Intermediate Repairer
MOS 0651: Data Network Specialist
MOS 0656: Tactical Network Specialist

Now for the point of the thread. Is there any other computer involved fields that I may have missed? Also, for any Marines currently in any of these fields, what is a typical day like working in those fields?

Thanks!

Poolee Underwood

Not trying to be a smartass or anything, but have you asked your recruiter? I'm sure he can pull up a list or just tell you all of the Computer related jobs in the Marines.

He gave me a link to usmilitary.about.com/od/enlistedjo2/a/marinejobs.htm the other day for me to look through. Simply because the main reason for the thread is to hopefully get some sort of idea of what a basic day is like doing some of these jobs, of which he may not be able to give, I decided I'd just ask for any other computer related jobs that Marines know of here as well.

Ah, I get ya, well let me go ahead and leave this thread to someone who knows what they are talking about :D

I do not know much about 2847, but i do have pretty good knowledge on 0651 & 0656. Those MOS's teaches you how to set up networks

Pretty much 0651 & 0656 are merged together. The 2 jobs are pretty much one in the same. The course for both MOS's start off with IT Essentials. Which consist of how computers are built and and how they operate. Then you move on to the Modules which consist of building networks and routers and so on. Then it's Microsoft Server, Exchange, Tac Comm, and Tat Security. Plus side with this MOS is if you do not decide to stay in you'll make way more than you would in the Marine Corps, especially with a secret security clearance. And this MOS is quick to rank up as well.

From what i hear this is the second hardest MOS's behind linguistics. The course is difficult, but hard work and dedication to studies will prevail.

I know that all three MOS's will put you in 29 Palms, CA for your MOS school. the 0651 course is 3 months or 72 days. and i think the 2847 which is probably a year long.

I'm currently going through the 0651 course.

awesome, thank you very much on that insight. Networking is also a big interest I have (ive done a little bit of study in it). And i'll embrace the challenge of it being "the second hardest MOS". Do you happen to know what a typical day would be like in the fleet? Also, do you know if this MOS is in high need in the field (ie deployments)?

Anyone happen to have much insight for 2847?

Thanks again for all the help!

I don't know much about Marine Corps IT designations...however I have worked with AF and Army IT sections (being an IT contractor myself). <br />

At a low rank, your job basically entails pulling cable....

Data guys are generally used as "general" IT. Most of the ones I've worked with did everything from network configurations and running CAT5e to system troubleshooting and hardware replacements. Echelon maintainance levels comes into play quite often as there's specific levels of 'authorized' maintainance that can be performed by unit-level Marines. More advanced and technical matters generally are sent off for someone else to deal with or come to the unit and conduct the work.

Most of the guys I worked with were well versed in A+ and Net+ related work.

Thanks Vandrel I appreciate that additional info!

Just found MOS 2651: Special Intelligence System Administrator/Communicator

Anyone have any real general info for this field? (I know not much can be shared due to the nature of the job). Outside with is given on about.military that is.
Also, How long does training run for that MOS?

Again, thanks for all the information!

You won't do anything till you get deployed. NMCI does everything. I know, they took my job.

ouch that's no good, what do you do wherever your stationed then?

I don't want to be sitting around doing bull **** all the time. I wanna be in there working on computers/networks etc.
