Hello,
I'm interested in enlisting in the Marines. I'm in my early 20's and have experimented with Marijuana. I understand that admitting that you've used marijuana does not disqualify a potential recruit from enlisting, however:
My question is this (as such is the title):
Does admitting usage automatically disqualify you from certain jobs? / MOS Availability / Military Benefits?
My reason for reattempting the enlistment process is because I've taken a few years to slack off and do all sorts of stupid things to get my immaturity out of the way and I think i've gotten all that out of my system and I am ready to move on to the next phase of my life. I had originally began the enlistment process for the Navy but was not really interested in joining (and the recruiter may have suggested bending the truth to get in easier; NO = Navy Opportunity!) and here I am now ready to fully commit.
The primary reasons I'd like to join the Marines is that i've always respected and admired Marine culture. I was in a program similar to ROTC in High School, hosted by my woodshop teacher who may have been Force Recon Marine. He'd always recount stories and i've always wanted to have similar, interesting stories. Good or bad, it's an experience I believe I want to have in my life. Secondary are the benefits that one may receive such as the G.I. Bill to pay for college, housing benefits, and of course pay as finding a job as an unskilled worker in today's economic climate is quite challenging.
I have always been highly interested in computers and possess a great deal of computer-related skills that I feel would help our Country and I would love nothing more than to serve my Country by using my passions. However, because I'm assuming that Military-oriented computer work is classified/information-sensitive material, I feel that my admittance of previous marijuana, or "drug usage" will prevent me from getting into the M.O.S. I want, and ultimately disqualify me from College benefits so that I might have the chance at securing my dream job; A Department of Defense / National Security Agency computer/network-security type job.
I am particularly scared that if I enlist, I will not qualify for a majority of the reasons that I signed up for. I sincerely understand that there is no place for drugs in the Military which is why I will voluntarily admit guilt in my usage of marijuana so that it might work in my favor if my history is looked under greater scrutiny should I be fortunate to be in consideration for the aforementioned jobs.
Truth be told, i've always been under the impression that the Marines would be a poor branch "fit" for me because of the inferred lack of technical necessity or expertise (older equipment?), being that the Marines are supposedly "jarheads" and that mostly Marines are frontline infantry -- not like say the Army or Airforce who supposedly have "better" and "newer" toys/hardware. However, I come today to ask these questions to get rid of any misunderstandings -- so please forgive my ignorance.
Thank you for your time!
