Looking for anyone that served with a Michael (Mike) Paul McAvoy. He claims to have served in Viet Nam and that he was honorably discharged as an E4 Buck Sergeant.

No further details at this...

Well you know the route. Have you vetted him, MOS? DD-214 etc? Not sure looking for someone who served with him is going to be very fruitful. But good luck

Figured this might be a long shot. But on the other hand -- why the hell not, right?

Well, you've got him on one mistake, the E-4/Sgt. Ask him what unit he was in and specific locations. I don't know a cogent Vietnam vet who can't tell you his unit and where his unit was based.

Y'all that think there was no such thing as a buck Sergeant E-4 when Vietnam started were not in the same Corps as I was. Granted, there were very few of the old ones around but they did exist.

Sure did. Also had Acting Sgt's. Fact is we had a lo of actor's while they were changing the Rank Structure.

And probably a lot of PO'd Sgt E-4s who got the "crossed rifles" and not the rocker they were expecting or thought they had earned.

It's possible, but highly unlikely that he was a Buck Sergeant while serving in Nam. The rank changes (crossed rifles and pay increases) were announced in Fall of 1958 with implementation to begin...

When I made E-5 I wore the SSgt. chevrons as at the time they didn't have the new ones in the system yet.

Thinking more about this subject. When I was stationed at Camp Hague, Okinawa in 1964 with the 3rdMarDiv G-2, we had two buck Sgts and they both had been sent to Vietnam for about 60 day as advisors before we all went down in force in 1965.
