Hi marines/pooles been a lurker on the forums for a about a year now since i got into the DEP, my current mos is 5711 CBRN Defense Specialist, and after thinking about my future and why im joining the marines, i started to realize I wanted to be a cook, since that what i plan on doing when i get out.

Couple Questions about the MOS

1. Where is the Mos School
2. Anyone closely related to that MOS, give me any information about what this mos is all about.
3. What is the Marine Aid Mos?

thanks, used the search but didnt come up with much...however a couple months ago i saw a thread about this but i couldnt find it.

oh god dude, food specialists are essentially the mcdonalds of the Marine Corps, you're not like a cook, it's more like preparing massive amounts of food for people to consume. None of it tastes good, you just are the one who mixes that stuff together. Unless you plan on becoming a burger king employee when you get out, it's not going to help your culinary career.

I'd stay with your current MOS or re-evaluate even enlisting. If your goal is to become a cook, go to school for it. Our chow is nasty.

Show me on the doll where the cook touched you.
I'll see about finding someone to come give you a hug.

1. Where is the Mos School
Army Quartermaster School at Fort Lee, Virginia. You do the first half of your training along with the Army. Parachute Riggers, Mortuary Affairs, and Bulk Fuel also have their schools at the same place.

2. Anyone closely related to that MOS, give me any information about what this mos is all about.
If you want to advance your culinary skill, and eventually become a certified cook, the MOS will definitely give you many valuable skills and opportunities. Make sure you ask your chain of command about the Military Apprenticeship Program as soon as you hit the fleet, because through it many Food Service Marines EAS after 4 years and get fantastic jobs as Chefs and Managers at good restaurants. Volunteer for as much as you can, and try to win Chef of the Quarter and Chef of the Year competitions, as they qualify you to go to professional courses at the Culinary Institute of America in New York, all expenses paid.

3. What is the Marine Aid Mos?
You become the personal Chef/assistant to a General or similar VIP.

The thread you are looking for is now a sticky at the very top of the Ask a Marine forums.

Is the Food Service School not at Camp Johnson anymore?

Correct, it is not. My understanding is that it moved sometime in the late 90s? As stated, it is now at Ft. Lee, VA.
