Just recieved it in the mail friday night. This book is pretty good. It's one of the only books I've ever read that made me laugh out loud.
It starts off a bit slow, with the former Marine talking about taking to a recruiter, going to MEPS, and DEP. Suprisingly, he only spends about a page and a half on boot camp, and 90% of that is about recieving. In his words: "Go rent Full Metal Jacket. It's exactly like that". I'm only about 2/5 through the book, and am reading about his time in Okinawa. Pretty hilarious stuff. I was a little suprised at how mutch the author talks bad about his platoon members. He only is truly friends with a few, and apparently the rest are sh*t birds or malingers (injury fakers that want out of the Corps.) Also, his "seniors" (Mostly Corporals, he doesn't really specify rank) treat him like sh*t.

Sounds good. My copy shipped Dec. 5th, so now I'm just waiting. I'm really interested in reading about his time as an infantryman in Baghdad.

The book is good. It very closely resembles the Marine Corps that I know. Senior Marines treat boots like crap, and there are some really messed up people out there.

My Christmas reading suggestions for you lads:
We were One, Shoulder to shoulder with the Marines who took Fallujah, Patrick O'Donnell. This is, without a doubt, one of the best small unit action books I've read on Iraq, and I've read quite a few of them. You'll get up close and personal with no-s**t gunfighters. BUY IT. Amazon selling it now for 16.50 No True Glory, A front line account of the battle of Fallujah, by Bing West. Gives both a 'grunt level' and commanders eye view of the entire picture of the battle of Fallujah. Others will try and tell the story, but this is the best overall picture told thus far, all others will have to meet this standard. I'd suggest reading West's book first, for the 'big picture', and then O'Donnell's. Both are 'tell it like it is' kinda guys...no punches pulled.

Sgt Leprechaun, I LOVED "We Were One". I thought it was incredible. Tragic but inspiring. One of the best books I've ever read.
For those who haven't read it, BUY IT! 'One Bullet Away' was also awesome, it follows a Marine Officer through OCS, TBS, Operations in Afghanistan, Recon Training and Operations in Iraq. Definitely worth a look.

I've read One Bullet Away. I was pretty impressed by Capt. (then Lt. I believe) Fick's writing. I even emailed him once and he sent me a reply within less than 3 days.

I've read "Boot", "Marine, the life of Chesty Puller" and picked up "No True Glory." Its look good and some of the pictures (expecially those of the two Blackwater USA guys on the bridge) are kinda graphic and clue you into the nature of the Iraqis.

Thanks from the author
Hello all,
I'm Richard C. Meyer, the author of "Four in the Corps." I was quite surprised to see a thread on my book, which was self-published two years ago. I wrote it for fun, just to show to friends and family. To those who have read it, I'm glad that you "got it." It was meant as a humorous, day-in-the-life. Right now I am making a shorter, complaint-free version. No joke, I took out the complaining and it got 100 pages shorter! I never submitted it to publishers before, but I will after this draft. If you read it and have any advice for me, please let me know. Thanks again for reading my book. |
