Cool NO Marine should refer to our Emblem as an "EGA!"

What the hell is An EGA???

NO Marine should refer to our Emblem as an "EGA!" There is no such thing as an EGA. Just as there is neither a Marine Sergeant who is an E-5, nor a Marine Corporal who is an E-4! No E-numeric ranks! Hey, I don't condone those silly "oohrahs," either--Semper Fidelis was the motto of the Old Salts I followed into the Corps, and it still is for all Marines now!

-Dick Gaines, GySgt USMC (Ret.)
1952-1972

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was inspired to write this short webpage by an article I discovered in a recent issue of Leatherneck magazine. That profoundly significant article by Sergeant Major David W. Sommers, USMC (Ret), was on the topic of the non-existent EGA, You may wish to read the full text of his article in the February 2001 issue of Leatherneck; it is in the Sound Off column, page 63, under the title, "SgtMaj Sommers: No Way To "EGA"
He states, in part:
"...as a newly promoted corporal in 1961, I was taught by my battalion sergeant major
that I was responsible to my commander and the Corps to protect the customs, courtesies
and traditions of our Corps.
To the NCOs and staff NCOs, the protectors of our customs, courtesies and traditions;
you better nip this one in the bud before it gets away from you....The emblem of the Corps is the common thread that binds all Marines together, officer, enlisted, past and present...To reduce our emblem to just initials or an acronym is unforgivable and should not be tolerated. The eagle, globe and anchor tells the world who we are, what we stand for and what we are capable of, in a single glance. This same emblem is a living, breathing symbol of the spirit that is in each of us who are priviliged to wear it. It is a spirit that makes a qualitive difference between a Marine and any other fighting force in the world. It is not the "EGA" but the eagle, globe and anchor, the emblem of the United States Marine Corps."
-SgtMaj David W. Sommers, USMC (Ret)

I agree! There are some things that you just don't do. i've been off active duty since 1996 and I still don't put my hands in my
pockets. It just doesn't feel right.

It's got to be in our blood! I finally found a ball cap that I really like. Before I realised it, I found my self uncovering whenever I went indoors!

Drifter I fully Agree and I am just a lowly Doc. I had the honor to spend more years then most with the Corp but that was by choice. Why???? It amounts to nothing but respect. I Loved the Marines I served with and chided many over crap that most Squids would have gotten their as$ kicked for but I was Doc and they returned as much crap as I gave them. At the same time I have been in many bar room brawls over some Squid making some dumb AS% crack about the Marine actually started a few of them. Actually had to go to sick call one time to have some Army Dogs tooth removed from my knuckle (God I Loved Korea). The Eagle Globe and Anchor sould never be referred to as an EGA. To many men have given to much for that also why after working so hard for the Emblem would anyone want to refer to it as an EGA. I Can not even understand that line of thinking.

That goes both ways, Doc Crow. One time as a young Marine I made a joking comment about a Corpman's dress uniform. A Gunnery Sergeant (combat veteran) heard my stupid remark and pinned me to the wall with his index finger. He told me to have respect and never say anything as disrepectful as that again. And I never have!

He also gave me an extra duty assignment to research Navy Corpsman. That's where I learned about HM2 David Robert Ray, Medal of Honor (post humus) from the same town where I went to High School.

I agree with all the above. To use the other term is disrespectful
and just a lazy person's way to refer to the "Eagle,Globe and An-
chor".

Smile Right Here,in This Website

Count me in with the above posts..I first saw the abbreviation [EGA] in this website...I thought the younger Marines used it in the daily routine of things...same goes for....S/F...it's used as SOP also in here...I hate to think I fell for that too...NO MORE...I'm going back to ...Eagle-Globe-Anchor and Semper Fidelis...it makes me feel better about myself to spell it out...why don't we all...kick-ass...on the lazy guys who continue to use...EGA and S/F in here...Semper Fidelis, Marines.
