What are some MOS's that translate well into the civilian world?

    Hello Marines,

Earlier i was talking to an officer in the Army (Infantry) who just retired after 26 years in. Guy really knew what he was talking about and had some great stories and advice for me.

I was most likely going to pick Crew Chief (AG Contract) as my MOS. He was telling me that i should only join the military if they can offer me something that helps me as a stepping stone into the civilian world, that helps in obtaining a JOB. Basically he offered me advice that it sucks when you get out and your in the same place as you were when you graduated high school and, experience and ribbons dont mean crap unless you did something that Employers want to look at.

Which is why im asking this question, what are some other MOS's that the Marine Corp can offer me that could help me out? I was pretty set on going into the Marines as a Crew Chief, but he just had an answer for every question that i had and it kind of made me rethink my options. Thank you.

I'm guessing crew chief would be good if your looking to go into aviation/mechanic type stuff.

The values you will learn as even a basic Marine will be of more value than any mos training you could receive in the other branches. For instance, employers will know that you are not a quitter, you have a high sense of honor and personal integrity. You will learn to identify, set your sights and nothing will stop you from accomplishing your goals.

Just about any job in the Marine Corps will give you something that can be taken over to the civilian side. Whether it be something tangible like a skillset, certifications, etc., or something intangible like leadership, decisiveness, judgement, etc. I will say this, only join the military if you are willing to give yourself up, unselfishly, to the military. The military can give you a lot of things, great things to use after you are out, but you will benefit no one if you come in with a what-can-the-military-offer-me attitude.

Why rethink your options? Do you want to do that MOS? If you want to do it then do it. Pick something you are interested in. Doing a job that will translate well in the civilian sector means nothing if you don't enjoy what you are doing. My job, linguist, will transfer over well into the civilian sector, but i had no idea about that before I joined. I joined and became that because it was what I wanted to do and I came to love my job.

I would say that next time don't talk to an Army officer about going enlisted in the Marine Corps. The mindset is different (officer/enlisted, Marines/other).

Since your profile states that you are in NY City, I would suggetst 0311 Rifleman or 0351 Infantry Assaultman

First off you need to figure out what kind of job you wanna do if you ever leave the Corps.

    Civilian Job:
    FireFighter
    Police Officer
    Salesman
    School Teacher
    Computers
    Doctor / Nurse

That will give you a good idea as to how to arrange your military career along with a high ASVAB score.

talking to some sh*t bag army turd about the Marines is about as dumb as that douche bag asking if he can use skin lotion in boot camp. Are you frickin serious kid? What the f*ck do you thing this army turd knows about the Marine Corps? The one thing I know he can tell you is that he never had the balls to become a Marine and therfore doesnt know jack sh*t.

Go talk to a recruiter for christ's sake, I swear to god some of you kids are about as smart as a monkey trying to f*ck a doorknob

Dude forget what the Army douche told you. Any Crew Chief in the Marines can get an FAA A&P licence to work on any civilian or military aircraft. That alone costs Thousands and years of experience for any civilian to get. Google A&P Licence. I got my sign offs from the Feds from being a Harrier Mech MOS 6212. You have ONE year from getting out to take advantage or the FAA will not sign off. Don't be a lazyturd and be like some of my friends who said "Man I wished I got my A&P". THe civilian world is hurting for aircraft Mechs.

Also I would not be flying for the companies I do now if it wernt for the A&P. Not to mention I used the GI bill for Flight School. THink about that!

EDIT: Government contractors are always seeking Expereinced Helo Crew Chiefs, for Secret Squirrel stuff...$$$$

AND Today I get to go fly a half million dollar airplane to another airport so I can do some routine maintenace on it...LOL

I'm a 7051 Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting Specialist. If you can get into this field, you'll be set in the civilian world.

Air Traffic Controller would get you a job in the civilian world.

But even more so, I agree with this guy. 7051 = Best MOS in my opinion

Gee..based on your Avatar that's not a big surprise. LOL. Is that a converted Hummvee? Looks pretty bad.

Anyway...kid, don't let someone who has never been a Marine try and talk you out of doing something you want to do. Heck, that would be the equivlant of me trying to talk someone out of being a mechanic, because they are always 'dirty' and it's something I can't do.

Do what's right for YOU and worry about the rest later. Yeah, your future is yours, and doing something dumb can screw it up a lot faster than 'choosing the wrong job'.

You'll be fine. Do what makes YOU happy.

Yea you're right, i told my recruiter i want to try 0231. trying to find out information to help grunts complete their mission sounds satisfying and putting in hard work and seeing it put into action looks like a great reward. I just hope that i still want to do 0231 Reserves after boot. Alot of the poolee's who go to boot and come back want to go AD and they cant.

I really enjoyed 0231. One good thing, that TS clearance is worth big bucks in the civvie world if you want to go that route.

If you like talking to people and doing a LOT of research, that's the job for you. There's a thread on it here, just run a search.
