    Enlistment

If I enlisted today as 03xx and finished all my training. How long do you think it would take until I would be deployable to iraq/afghanistan?

There's really no way of telling. It could be up to a year before you could even ship to boot camp, then afterwards you'd have to complete SOI. Even when you DO get to your Unit, they may not be deploying.

Alright I see, I heard some guys speaking about voluntarily going after you've completed your training and you're in your unit.

You got a few more years to go there young man. You're only 16. Why don't you concentrate more on getting good grades and getting your high school diploma. Do not quit school and get a GED. A waiver for GEDs are hard to come by these days.

I don't have many days actually my school year is short this year to budget cuts and I'm going to sign next month. I'll take your advice still and I apply my self very hard on academics. I'm pretty much good to go with my school grades. I'm really just trying to get all the information as I can possible on these boards and you Marines are really helping me out. I really appreciate all the help you all have to offer thanks.

Plus, by law, you can't enter a combat zone until you are 18.

Not sure how it works with active duty, but with reserves you could in theory get out of SOI, check into your unit, and if they happen to be starting their workup (3 months) that week you would hop right on board, and be over-seas within 3-4 months. I know active duty units work up as well, I'm just not sure if you are allowed to jump in on a workup once it has started. I know there is a cutoff with the reserves (IE, if the unit is halfway done with their workup, your staying home).

Gotta be 18 to fight. Until that time you are 'in the rear with the gear'.

I promise you, many youngsters before, and likely many after, have felt the same way...

"IT'LL ALL BE OVER BEFORE I GET THERE!!!!"

Even if it is.....there'll be plenty more.
