Investigation attributes Chon An sinking to North Korean torpedo
By Sebastien Falletti
21 May 2010
A North Korean CHT-02D torpedo with an explosive warhead of 250 kg sank the South Korean corvette RoKS Chon An , an international investigation team concluded on 20 May in a verdict that further raised tensions between the two neighbours.
After examining the wreckage of the ship as well as fragments found on the bottom of the Yellow Sea (West Sea), experts from Australia, Sweden, the UK and the United States, as well as South Korea, said that a torpedo made in North Korea was responsible for the sinking on 26 March.
For the first time, the investigation team disclosed publicly what it considered the most critical piece of evidence against Pyongyang.
