Those are the recruiting districts. The "Mississippi River" rule of thumb hasn't been around for decades.
This coming from a boot! This is bad intell, show me where this hasn't been around for decades. It is not uncommon for them to ship someone to SD or PI when they have slots to fill, like some turd falling in love on spring break and doesn't want to have the "love of his life" run off with someone else, so now they need to fill it and PI is full so you now get to go to SD. This mostly happens in the summer with the herd platoons (80+ Recruits, I saw a 112 in a platoon one time). They also will transfer a DI from one Depot to another. The case with my friend graduating DI school in SD and sent to PI. Why? He and I still haven't figured that one out.

But to answer the Poolees question, you have two sucks to choose from large quantities of sand fleas at PI, or big mountains that make you cry in SD. Either way, life will suck for 13 weeks. But well worth it.

The picture Rock, don't you have trees? Palms don't count.

    Mountains? Sand dunes don't count.

    Streams? Gutters don't count.

Trout? Broiled in a retaurant don't count.

Michigan recruits often go to San Diego. I did, so did my father in WWII.

Two guys I know from Cleveland,Ohio in 1967 went to Diego.
I went to P.I. in 68, it has to be filling a summer slot as they went in June of 67 and myself in Aug.68 and it was a "herd" platoon 80+.

I am a "Hollywood Marine" and I enlisted in Ohio. They issued us sunglasses, sunblock, and flip-flops for beach time
