    switching

Good Evening Devil Dogs, now before anyone says I can't post in this forum, I'm not a poolee, I'm a Marine. I've been busy as hell through out my leave because of recruiters assistance and now (one day before leaving for MCT) I have time to sit on the computer. My MOS is 3531, and based on the description of the MOS, and what others have said on this forum, I'm pretty sure I won't be too happy with it. But I'm gona make the best of it no matter what. I just wanted to know, when will I be able to request to switch to a different MOS. I've heard different answers, some say after my first enlistment, others say in a year or two. Can anyone clear this up for me? And who do I contact to change my status from poolee/wanabe to Marine.

2 years, usually, unless you got a bonus for the MOS, then longer unless you pay it back. Send a PM to 'the drifter' she can change your title for you.

You aren't going to be able to lat move without re enlisting or extending. Don't count on it happening near your 2 year mark. The Marine Corps is going through lots of changes right now with enlistments, re-enlistments, early EAS'ing, early re-enlisting, etc.

    3531 is Motor T, correct.

What were you expecting when you signed the contract for this MOS field? I have a few friends that are Motor T and they love it.

Motor T will take you anywhere if I remember correctly. I'm sure that Motor T in MCLB Albany will give you a different shade of Marine Corps than someplace like 2st BN 7th Marines Motor T.

Wherever you serve it will be different than what you expect.

Motor T can be really bad, but there are so many Motor T units around I'm sure there are many good ones. It's a really important job, and like any job has its downsides and upsides. You could try to request a change now..not sure what good it would do. I enlisted as an 0351, and found out at SOI that I was going to be a mechanic. I requested that change to occur when I got to SOI, but then two days later we left base (the small one attached to New River..Camp Geiger?) and went to the field. By the time we got back, we were done with MCT. I asked again about my MOS and was told I could lat-move on the spot but I would have to go into holding and pick up with the next ITB class and roll from MCT to ITB and go through the 0351 training. Not sure how that would work out for you. Prob. depends on how many people are waiting for your Motor T school seats. The monitor isn't going to let a Motor T school seat go empty b/c a guy just out of bootcamp wants to change his MOS. It just all depends on what's available and what the monitor is willing/able to do.

I suggest you get through your MOS school and get into the Fleet before you even start thinking about lat-moving. Get some experience in your MOS so you can determine how you feel about it, not how others feel about it.

I'm personally thinking about lat-moving, but that's because I've been doing my MOS for two years and only rarely enjoy it. I want to re-enlist, but not in this MOS. You haven't even gone through your schooling yet and you already want to switch your job. Give it a shot, with an open mind, and you might even end up liking it.

Well I think his point is, unless I'm misunderstanding, is that he hasn't done any training in his job. He went to bootcamp and is doing RA vice his 10 day leave b/f going to MCT. With that...if he is going to an MOS he didn't intend to...I figure the best time to do it is before the Corps wastes any money and time in training him. This is a long shot b/c it will f-up school seats (for MOS school) and mods may have to be made to orders...but if MOS school orders haven't been cut yet, I think he has a chance, however unlikely. If he's been to school, he's not going to lat-move. It would be a total waste of time and resources on everyone's part. Really, the only reason the Marine Corps lets people lat-love is if it benefits Marine Corps needs and/or the career of the Marine.

Plenty of Marines got "f*cked" over with their MOS, but I have never heard of someone changing MOS's before they even hit the Fleet. I've never heard of it without doing a lat-move.

You can get reassigned if you don't pass certain schools. Aircrew and ATC come to mind.

Yeah, I'm not too savvy on this stuff. I just figured it might be easier for those split-time reservists since they have all that gap time between MCT and MOS school. Does anyone know if the contract signed while enlisted gets automatically entered into the system to reserve a boat space in whatever school house? I mean, JWDevil is pretty accurate, if even possible you'd have to find someone wiling to modify that....and most would prob. tell you to go pound sand.

Actually, I met a guy who got kicked out of a mechanic school because they found out he was color blind. Same stipulation for EOD...you know, red wire/green wire and all that.
