Jacksonville is much like a small town...it won't be hard to adjust at all. Try to get in with a group of couples such as yourself. Sorry, but I haven't lived there in quite awhile. Maybe just "google" it up and see what you can find out.

Jacksonville has really grown in the last decade to meet the needs of the base, last year a second WM Super center opened and you also have all the other retailers that you may be use to. It should not be that hard to find some type of work to keep you busy as well.
Here are a few sites:

http://onslow.craigslist.org/apa/
It is Onslow County, so you can google that or Jacksonville, NC for rental listing

Base housing has an inverted priority system ie if you are a private with dependants the wait for a house on base is much shorter than say a sergeant with dependants. The sooner you or him can get your name on the list the better.

I know a young couple that waited over a year for base housing. Their house was finished (brand, spanking new) last month while her husband was in Afghanistan. She left TN 2 weeks ago to move in just so she wouldn't go to the bottowm of the list again. She tells me the wait was worth it. She loves her new digs. Good news for her is her brother in law is still stationed there and he and his Marine buds helped her move in. Her hubby should be home in approx 6 weeks.
Enjoy your life in NC and make the most of it. Like Crew Chief said, get active in the community and find yourself a church to attend. You'll see that it will make all the difference in the world.
My wife and I will be at CLNC for 2/2s homecoming!!

Before his second deployment they lived in a trailer not tooooo far from the back gate. When he deployed last October, she came back to her mother's in TN until she got word that her house was ready. She and their daughter will be there when he gets home. He was going to reenlist, but the MOS he wanted is closed, so he's getting out next January.
Your Marine is fortunate to have you as a supportive wife. I too had a lot of support from my wife. It certainly makes it easier to put up with lots of stuff that we had no control over. We still laugh about things we used to do in Opa Locka (Miami) and El Toro (southern Calif.).
