    2/8

my son said he's in 2/8. what does light infantry mean?

It means he's a "ground pounder". Termed that because they walk everywhere they go. That or a "grunt". A term of endearment used by the Corps when referring to an infantryman. They are the basic fighting unit of the Marine Corps (the ones that do the face-to-face fighting). They are the cutting edge and the epitome of our Marine Corps. Of course he could be assigned to that unit as a support body. That's all of the other people in the Battalion that aren't mos 03XX (admin, supply etc) who support the grunts.

I saw a good documentary that featured 2/8 doing mountain warfare training on the military channel just the other day. If you get a chance to catch it, you should watch it. It will give you a real good idea of what your son does if he's a grunt.
