Vietnam
My #1 daughter called tonight to report she is going to Vietnam in May 2010 for some kind of humanitarian mission. She volunteered (silly rabbit).
It's just for her annual training tour, so it's a short trip. Probably safer there now than most anyplace else in the world.
She doesn't know exactly where yet, but she's all excited.

Chris, have her post some pixs of Phu Bai, Khe Sahn and Marble Mountain, when she returns.
... and remind her to be careful and trust no one.
I can look at pixs, but I ain't going back.

I will, but she doesn't know exactly where in the country she is going yet. It could be up North. She knows they will not have time off to do much sight-seeing.
I think they are going to be fixed in a spot and essentially run MEDCAPS as she is a medical admin tech and almost everyone else going is a medical type.
I guess I'll have to brush up on my Vietnamese so I can teach her the basics.
Her smart-assed commander offered to make reservations at a certain hotel in Hanoi for her in the McCain Suite.

Well, it looks like #1 daughter is not going to Vietnam after all.
She has had a standing request for orders to Afghanistan and a set is coming down. She leaves early next year for a six-month tour at Bagram in the CASF there.
#1 daughter says this is a normal tour rotation and not part of any surge.
Her mother is very nervous about it, and I confess I am a little bit too. But what father wouldn't be? #1 daughter is very excited. I am also very proud of her since she is volunteering to go.
I guess Bagram is about as safe as anyplace in that country. Safe being relative.

Thanks everybody.
I am very proud of my daughter. She has done quite well in the AF Reserves and enjoys serving. She claims she wants to go Afghanistan because she was tired of only one person in the family having war stories to tell.
Her husband jokes that she just wants the Kindle book reader he promised her if she deployed again.
#1 is planning to be in the gym and weight pile as often as she can. She wants to come home looking like she did after basic (quite skinny actually).
I have a few combat survival tips to pass on to her. The same tips my father gave to me and my experiences in Vietnam and in training validated them.
