Reserve MOS and Active MOS

I'm in the process of joining the Corp and am considering reserve instead of Active, does anyone have any thoughts on what Reserve MOS' would benefit me the most towards my career (Law Enforcement)?

No specific MOS is gonna help you get a law enforcement job. What they look for is honorable service. In the end getting the job will be all on you and not your military service/MOS.

You being in the military will only give you a few extra points in your hiring process.

I'm sure there is a PMO (military police) reserve unit. If you want some prac app it will go a long way in helping you. If you have that down on your application (that you went to the military police school) I'm sure it's going to give you a leg up on Joe Blow who's fresh from McDonald's. Or some other POG who works on generators in the military.

Also, with that extra experience under your belt, you civilian job will be easier for you. And if you use it your leadership will see it and set you up right and proper.

Your MOS as a reservist goes by your closest unit you can report to, you really don't get a choice in the matter. You get contracted to that unit and have to do whatever they have available.

This isn't always true. It's best to pick a reserve station nearest your home, but its not mandatory.

And in larger cities you have several to choose from. I had four reserve centers to pick from near my home and more if I wanted to travel.

You are absolutely right Cpl. I just didn't want him to think he could pick any MOS he wants when in reality he really can't. Sure he could get contracted to a reserve unit being an 03xx for example but he may end up having to make expensive and timely travel arrangements every month just to go to drill.

There are plenty of police officers in my unit here. All of our MOSs are 1391 Bulk Fuel Specialist. Does that have anything to do with law enforcement?...no

Go active, I was a cop and a reservist. I would suggest MSF and 0300. You will never have to worry about weapons training in the PD. Well, you will have to learn their "way". I promise you, active will help you out in the long run.

The PD down here pays the Cop on the Reservist duty weekends not including the pay from the Marines. Not too bad Id say.

anything will help you out big time, even working in an office. you will get all the basic weapons training, dicipline, and other hard core stuff.

I'm in the same boat. Just graduated MP school on Sep16th. I'm a 5811 reservist, field MP of course. Far as I know no PMO reserve unit exists. I completed MN academy in 07-08 and joined the Corps in February. My take on it is I wish I had done Marine Corps first as it has taught me a lot more leadership skills and prepared me mentally for civilian LE then academy did. Also a lot of states will wave academy requirement if you have 4-5+ years of active MP service. You will have to check on your particular state to be sure. Other than that really any combat MOS will give you the tools you need to do well in the civilian world. One thing to keep in mind is military police and civilian police are very different worlds and what you learn in one will usually not work in the other. They are two very different animals. Being a Marine will help you more in the areas of physical shape, leadership skills, mental fortitude, and responsibility. All things that will help you immensely in the civilian LE world.
