Discharged from Delayed entry if I don't ship

Like other threads I have read I signed into the delayed entry program to a job that doesn't interest me in hopes that a job would become available to me with the new fiscal year. Pickings of MOS were pretty slim. My ship date is Dec 7th I am currently in Admin. I want an infantry MOS. When meeting with my recruiter last week he told me that if I do not ship on that day with my Admin MOS or Open Contract that I will be discharged from the delayed entry program. Are these my only options? I'm a moto Poolee. I have the highest IST score at my RS and scored well on the ASVAB with a 93.

Can I not stay in the DEP for 365 days in hopes of finding a different MOS?

    Thanks for your help.

Well what your recruiter says, goes, He isn't going to lie to you. You do have a right to re-negotiate that Contract. But, as you may have noticed from all the posts and such here and in the Ask a Marine forum, enlistment is really high right now and they are discharging people left and right for a lot of reasons. If you REALLY don't want admin, I guess you could go in on an Open Contract and PRAY that a slot in infantry or some other MOS you'd be interested in opens up while in boot camp.

If you want, PM Gunnery Sgt GyC on this site for some secondary advice. He'll know a lot more since he's a recruiter

Well from what I was told by our SNCOIC was that they can push your date back or closer as they see fit. I dont know if your recruiter does that but thats what mine said. It might depend on the recruiter. My ship date is 20100621 but it is being pushed up so i can leave after this semester of high school. Hope I shed a little light on your situation.

Capital M is right.... just to add to it though, the MC is over booked, if you will. You are right as far as the 365 days thing, however..... as recruiting quotas are met, they are subject to bend the rules a little but still remain within guidelines..... you have to understand, if the MC is dropping people from the DEP for not being able to perform as well as others but still meeting requirements and DEP qualifications they will drop you for not shipping when there is a slot.... in today's MC the main objective is to become a Marine, The rest is secondary.....

But if I were you I would sit down and have a serious 1-on-1 with your recruiter... but dont push too much. I'm sure he/she will understand your desire and try to meet your requests. Thats what they are there for.

Let him/her know that your primary goal is to become a Marine, your secondary goal is to obtain a MOS that is suitable for your character... from what I have heard 1st hand from Marines, Admin jobs are not that bad and they really help build your resume' for your career after the Marine Corps, should you choose to go that route.

    Good Luck

To be perfectly clear I do NOT think my recruiter is or has ever lied to me. We have a very good relationship and he seems to be on top of his things. However, I have learned that things do change and information passed from person to person is sometimes incorrect or is outdated. And there is nothing wrong with double checking your work since this will be my life for the next 4+ years. He called the Gunnery Sgt at our MEPS and he said my best bet of getting an infantry MOS at this time would be to ship with an Open Contract and that at boot camp I will meet with another Marine and he or she will have a list of MOS of people that failed out of boot camp. And I will be able to choose from this list.

Yes I have heard the same that the Marine Corps is overbooked. But da%n it I know there are some people out there that don't want it and haven't gone through as much as I have to get to this point. I guess that is just so frustrating for me. But that's life!

Brother let me tell you....... I have been in the DEP 4 times now..... this is the 4th time and hopefully the last before I ship. I live in FL and had to go to NC to enlist..... try flying & driving to NC 7 times just to sit a MEPS all day.... and on occasion, sit there for nothing and go back home get paperwork squared and go back.... and before all this I had to have hearings in MD & DC before recruiters would even talk to me.... I've been going through this since 2002.....

Everybody lies sometime, especially when it comes to bettering there careers. If you dont want to spend the next 4 years doing something you dont want to do, then dont. Worse case scenario is you drop out of dep then reenlist and wait for a infantry spot to come available the next time around. When your ship date gets closer and you tell your recruiter you will not ship until you have infantry then I think you will be pleasantly surprised what he comes up with.

Is recruiting differant state wise? Because i didnt even have to ask for 03 i was offered, and offered twice to go early, both times i didnt ship 1. because i was on vacation saying good bye to my family, and 2nd all the recruiters recruits passed their ist so i didnt get to ship in any of their places. I havent really had a hard time with my recruiter yet, sept when he ask me the day i got out of meps back when we first met if i wannted to go 66 -_-

Sorry to hear that man, my original ship date was Dec 7th as well, it just got changed to Oct 13, and I was granted a miracle by getting the MOS I wanted.

Hound your recruiter, that's all I can say. Ask him to let you call or write his superiors, that might sound out there, but that's what I did, and I got what I wanted. HOUND HIM, call alot, and get what you want. You want the Marines first, but make sure you ship with a MOS you're happy with.
