VA Awards $16.3 Million to Texas for Two State Veterans Homes

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

VA Awards $16.3 Million to Texas for Two State Veterans Homes

WASHINGTON (August 8, 2003) - The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has
awarded two grants totaling more than $16.4 million to the state of Texas to
build two new 160-bed veterans nursing home facilities, one each in El Paso
    and McAllen.

"These grants reflect the federal-state partnership that is honoring our
commitment to care for the men and women who have served in uniform," said
Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi. "This partnership
provides a comfortable home for veterans in a time of great personal need."

The grants will pay up to 65 percent of the cost of constructing each
facility. VA is providing $8 million of the $12.4 million cost of the
project in El Paso and $8.4 million of the $13 million home in McAllen.

Information about Texas state veterans homes can be found on the Internet at

    This is good news!

Will this happen in other states as well?

Most states have Veterans Homes. The need is in Texas because of the size of the state and number of aging veterans.

Does this money take away from the much needed money for regular VA health facilities?

Grants have nothing to do with what is already in the budget.

    Angry

    Dear "Big Eagle6"....Hi Brother Marine...
I would like to explain some FACTS about the State Veterans Homes
that the Dept. of VA builds for the States....
    1. That is all they do...is give the Money to build the Homes...
    2. The VA does not give the Homes any Operating Monies...
    3. This is where the WRONG Assumbtions are made...
    a) Admittance to these HOMES are not FREE !!!
    b) If the Veteran DOES NOT HAVE anyway to pay for his
care in these Nursing Homes...he/she WILL NOT be admitted.
    c) If you are a SC Veteran they will take all but $90.00
a month for your treatment there.
    d) If the Veteran has a Home,Bank Accounts, Investments
the STATES WILL TAKE IT ALL !!!!

It sounds and looks good to the General Public that has
absolutly no idea of how the Veteran Population is being
    RAPED...

    CAS3,

Just did read your response, thanks.

I was being cynical in my post because of Texas being the state of residence of our current President.

Your point of the SIZE of the state didn't say much to me. You can drive for a hundred miles across Texas and never see a veteran or anything else except open land. So size, in this case doesn't really matter. (I know what you are thinking but let's try to stay on the subject here

The number of ageing veterans however, seems more plausible. About half of my boot camp platoon was from Texas.
