    MCMAP Progression post Boot Camp

To all Marines: After completing Boot Camp, MCT, and MOS School, what opportunities does a new reserve Marine have to continue MCMAP training, beyond what was learned during Boot Camp?

Depending on the length of your MOS school, you could possibly train to get your next belt there.

Otherwise, the shop you work in should have an NCO or SNCO who is an MCMAP instructor. The weekends you come in find out if your unit has an instructor, and inquire about having the Marine train you. I'm active duty, but this is how I'd go about it if I were a reservist.

I was told by a Capt. down here that you can do the instruction online (theres a written manual and some youtube videos of certain techniques) and you can then test with a MCMAP instructor. I'm hoping to get my Gray belt while on Recruiters Assistance before even getting to SOI.

On a side note: can anyone post a link to a place I can buy a belt by belt training video or watch them? Youtube is too confusing, going move by move...i found a written manual that is pretty indepth, so if no one can help, I'll just use that

um... I haven't been on marinenet in a while but I'd think it would be there....

anyways... you can ask your command when you check in... they will offer belt upgrades as time permits... but trust me... you will be sitting around waiting to do some kind of "training".... two days is NOT enough to properly train reservists... that's why they have build-ups before you guys will deploy. you can possibly do ADOS orders to get a higher belt if your command has the funding.

My MOS is 0231 - the school runs for about 12 weeks, but 0231Marine explained that there will likely be weeks if not months waiting for a class to begin. Will there be enough time during the wait-time and school-time to train and advance in MCMAP?

that depends on you interim command. you have your MOS school command who is sometimes not in charge of you during this time... so keep in mind that if you get injured you can not pick up in your class in many cases. I'd suggest you not push the subject because sometimes they just don't care.

but if they offer it then take it... nothing like getting the belt before you hit the fleet.

We've had a few Marines in my MVOC platoon who got their Grey Belt during the time to wait to pick up for LVS. Wish they would've told me about it, lol.

Hold the phone! Keep in mind that while you may be in a holding status waiting for your class to pick up, that doesn't mean you get to chill at the barracks all day and have time to do what you want.

Marines on hold will still pt at 0600 every morning. From their, you'll march to NMITC where you'll receive English and writing classes for the majority of the day. You'll also be the Marines selected to escort unauthorized personel around the building so they can clean, take out the trash, things like that. You also may get selected to do gate guard in the mornings which means you'll be up at about 0330 where you'll get to march there and stand at the front gate checking ID's for the Marines and Sailors that drive to base in the mornings. You'll be lucky if you get out of NMITC before 1700 on most days and then you get to go back to the barracks and field day, do general clean-up, stand duty, do laundry, study for any English assignments you've gotten or write any papers that you need to. Then, after that, you'll get to focus on what you want to do.

I can tell you that in school, don't expect to watch some YouTube videos and then find a Marine to test you out. The only Marines that may be able to test you are also Instructors at the school and likely don't have time to take away from teaching their class to give you MCMAP instruction.

You're going to have to wait until you get to the fleet before you can likely get your Gray belt.

Once you get to your unit they will usually have an NCO there as an instructor. Sometimes its built into the training schedule for the drill weekend, other times its come to the unit on an "off" weekend or weekday and do it that way.

We did grey belt at our reserve unit over one weekend. I'm on active duty orders now waiting to deploy you have tons of time. A lot of guys have gone from Tan to Green while waiting to deploy. If it wasn't for HE classes i'd have my green...sigh.

I tried to download the MCMAP catalog on Marinenet and it wouldn't let me...just keep flashing the same screen every time I'd click download. It didn't "not" let me, just, glitched I guess. I've got 10 days left to learn it. So far I've made it through my knife, bayonet, and some of the throws and punches/kicks.

Wait wait wait a minute... DO NOT watch those videos on stupid you tube on all the techniques... THEY HAVE CHANGED. And if you get your hands on that retarded original MCMAP video, throw it away. Alot has changed in the program since those videos have been posted. You being a Reserve Marine; get with your command about upgrading your belt and MCMAP knowledge after you graduate. There are plenty of opportunities to upgrade your belt, so dont stress about it. MCMAP is not just about learning techniques and testing for them, its about having the knowledge to back up that belt you are wearing. You have to have a certain amount of Combat Conditioning to go along with that. I recently had a reserve Marine that came down on his own time to be in one of my classes, he went from tan belt to green belt. A good instructor will work with you, so dont think that you wont get your training, you will get it. Just ask around. If you see a Marine wearing the tan instructor tab, do not be afraid to go up and as him/her if he/she is doing any classes. Its their job. Go to wikipedia and type in MCMAP. Scroll down to the first reference - it should be the MACE website. Click on that and do some looking around on that site. Any other questions let me know.

Oh and as far as the MarineNet stuff... ill have to look into it for you.

alright, check it out Leatherneck. Best thing to do, go to http://www.tecom.usmc.mil/mace everything you need to know is there; the NAVMC 11432, MCO 1500.59, etc. Click on MAIT resources near the top on the left, it will have the curriculum for tan-black 1st deg. they are broken down to where my 2 year old could do MCMAP. In addition to this, find someone that is an MAI or MAIT so they can work with you and teach you. i just got my black belt now im tryin to go to MAIC then MAITC down the road. You will be happy you did it. Good Luck.
