    Pmi/cmi

I read on MOL the other day the CMI's took the spot of the old PMI's I'm assuming it to be true although I am a CMI and had never heard anything about that. Nevertheless, I was wondering does anyone know if this means that the CMI's are authorized to wear the "Smokey" just as the PMI's were?

I don't know what's changed, and I think the Range Officer has final say, but when I worked on a range the only people who were allowed or authorized to wear a smokey were the PMI range staff. My RO allowed a few "coaches" that were on the Battalion shooting team to also wear them but only when we were practicing or competing (the smokey originated on Marines shooting on the teams many moons ago). But I don't know what happened at every range in the Corps, only the one that I worked at.

Personally I was not a big fan of wearing them, they are hot, heavy, and young shooters whether they admit it or not have flashbacks or something seeing them and they sometimes would lock up.

    Good luck.

Me, and my smokey with Carlos Hathcock on Dam Neck Rifle range 1995:

**This is a picture of a damaged picture, I had a house fire and it's the only one I have left with Gunny.***

He was our guest instructor for DM school, RIP Gunny.

That's what the coaches wear, Pith helmets - range staff (at the ranges I worked and most that I paid attention at) wore the Smokies.

I was lucky to get to know Gunny, he signed the buttstock of an AR15 that I have, too. But that picture has seen better days.... SF

Well when I was at Camp Hansen's and Camp Johnson's and Cherrypoint's rifle ranges....we all had to wear Pith helmets. They were bulky as hell and hot I remember......things do change I guess....dam. I met the Gunny myself...twice. He even remembered my ugly mug on the 2nd meeting. LOL

    Standing Regulations

Range coaches are now CMC's 0933 and wear the pith cover. PMI transitioned to CMT's 0931 and are authorized to wear the smokey only at entry level ranges parris island, san diego, and weapons training battalion quantico,va.

    Pith Hemets

Does any motivator out there know where you can order a pith helmet (USMC regulation)? I am a PMI but never bought one while I was active.

    Thanks.
