Question Where does FAST Company get deployed?

My friend from high school is going through FAST training right now, and he said he was told they deploy every 7 months for 3 months at a time, seems a bit weird to me so I am unsure about that. And I would think they will get deployed to Afghanistan/Iraq.

My platoon guide came to us from FAST and told us something similar.

That would be a pretty cool deployment schedule.

Yeah i heard the deployments where a little different, i just didn't know the exact details, and so far i haven't heard of FAST going to Afghanistan or Iraq, you'd think they'd be going a lot but im not sure either. Hey do u know how your friend got into FAST company?

I'd have to ask him how he got in. My friend from bootcamp also got into FAST and he said they got selected from SF.

I'm sure they are considered for Iraq and Afghanistan now that they have multiple platoons. Back in my day, they only went when something went wrong at an embassy or a naval installation. I would guess, that they do missions that are security related in nature (convoys, diplomatic) but I could be wrong.

I was in 1F6 (1st FAST 6th PLT) out of Norfolk VA. As far as deployments go for FAST you are on a deployment work up for 10-13 months, the rest of your contrast is spent forward deployed out of Bahrain or Spain. While there you act as a quick response team for PST attacks on high value targets embassies when the USS Cole was hit the forward deployed PLT responded and provided security escort. So yeah we spent time in Iraq and Africa. FAST is a great unit very different from the FMF

Would you consider it a good unit for a first term infantry Marine? Especially with the Operations heating up in Afghanistan?

Well i thought it would a cool experience going into FAST and I also think it would be better then going into a regualr Security Forces unit Corporal

Go FAST, don't settle for regular SF. the FAST guys I know, are good to go mother****ers. My team leader is from FAST out of VA. All the stories about Cuba and being in Baghdad. Believe me you won't regret it.

As if you go to Kings Bay or Bangor. You won't get much experience. The guys we got from Kingsbay just didn't cut it. I was right out of SOI and I out PT'd and knew more them.

Yeah i would think the same thing, since the we changed the way we fight terrorism, especially after 9/11 Sergeant

How do you go about getting FAST? I have a slot reserved for Security Forces School and the whole UV contract but doesn't that only guarantee me for the Security Force Regiment? Do they draw people from a certain class to go FAST or can you request the FAST companies on your dream sheet out of the school?

    Regards,

Most of the things here are true. I was in 3F2 (3rd Fast Company 2nd Platoon) We did about a 10 month workup and then deployed to the US Embassy in Iraq. Our deployment was originally slated for 4 months. Due to the nature of standing post for so long and in such volatile areas, the burn out rate is much faster than other deployments. Our deployment was extended to 7 months since our relief was bumped to another assignment. From there I spent 60 days back in the states, we found out about 10 days prior to leaving that we were needed down at GTMO in Cuba. Spent 4 months there on the fence line mission, flew strait from there to Chile for a training mission with the locals for 2 weeks and then back home.

The deployment schedule is much different than the Fleet. While there is a regular rotation between Bahrain, Spain, and Japan, you may go to one of those places and do 3-4 small missions from there. You may do ship security during re-fuel and de-fuel of the nuclear powered ships. You may be slated as the react platoon for 3-4 months and be on 12 hour alert to respond anywhere in the world. It is a very high paced and fun unit to be apart of.

    Unpredicatable

    Deployments can be unpredictable...

You could get word of deployment, prep and stage and get ready to go, and then stand down. You could be in the field training and get an emergency deployment....

It's very dynamic. It also depends on what platoon you in also. Some platoons simply get chosen for a specific deployment for different reasons...

I was fortunate to have a great Plt Sgt and later an experienced officer that helped us get priority for the 'fun' deployments///
