Mount Clemens -- A U.S Marine from Mount Clemens has been charged with breaking into and vandalizing a U.S. Marine Corps recruiting office because of a beef over his paycheck, officials said Wednesday.

Adam Earl Transki, 24, of Mount Clemens has been charged on one felony count of breaking and entering and a felony count of malicious destruction of property in connection with the vandalism of the recruiting office, said Capt. John Roberts of the Macomb County Sheriff's Office.

Transki was a recruiter at the office and appears to have had a problem with his pay, said Sgt. Justin Schemanski, public affairs chief for the U.S. Marines Corps local recruiting division. Transki is serving in the Marines under its prior-service recruiting program. He got out of the Marines about a year ago, then recently rejoined the service as a recruiter aide, Schemanski said.

"There was an internal problem with (Transki's) pay, and he had a momentary lapse of judgment," he said. "He had a clean record prior to all of this."

If convicted, Transki faces up to 10 years for breaking and entering and up to five years for the destruction of property charge, police said.

The suspect was arraigned on the charges earlier today in the 41-B District Court in Clinton Township, according to court records. A judge set his bond at $30,000 cash or surety and scheduled a preliminary examination hearing for April 22 before District Chief Judge Linda Davis.

Transki may also face disciplinary action from the Marine Corps, Schemanski said. "It's definitely a possibility," he said. "This kind of behavior isn't tolerated by the Marine Corps and doesn't reflect our core values of honor, courage and commitment. He'll be dealt with accordingly."

Police say Transki broke into the recruiting office on Groesbeck Highway between Cass Avenue and Elizabeth Road sometime Monday night or Tuesday morning. Recruiters at the office reported the incident to police at about 6:10 a.m. Tuesday, Roberts said.

In addition to the damage the office sustained during the break-in, several items had also been broken, officials said.

Recruiters told police they suspected Transki was involved because they had some trouble with him on Monday, Roberts said.
