I've got an MOS dilemma now...

I got a call today, 3 weeks before I ship, telling me that my MOS was pulled and I got my 03xx job with the MSF detail, but apparently they forgot to pull the date so I'm still supposed to ship in August, and not April 27th.

I gotta get out of here. They can get me my old MP job for April 27th, but ever since I switched and talked to alot of my friends that are serving, I was really satisfied with my decision and was looking forward to bein a grunt.

Now I don't know what to do...After signing up for an 0300 job, bein an MP sounds sooo boring....

Wait wait wait. Unfortunately that is where we are all at right now. The soonest i can go is 20091207. And that will be for an 03xx position.

how long have you been in the DEP? I was sworn in in january. Most shipdates after june are filled up quick because of the high schoolers that are graduating.

You'd think that 03xx slots would be open all the time since...well, you know

That's what I thought at first too. I guess that's what everybody want though.

0300 is currently the largest MOS in the Marines, and there's not many ITB company's and people per platoon in them to keep up with the enlistee's.

Go with what will make you the happiest. Otherwise you will regret it. If youre having a tough time at home you might just have to ride it out or stay at a friends house till you ship.

    Good luck.

I walked into the recruiters office and told him; "I want infantry." He said; "How about tanks?"...

I was lucky enough to get an 03XX after signing an open contract and waiting a couple weeks. We'll see where the Corps wants me once/if I graduate.

You all must be coming from larger areas. Because from the time I first talked to the recruiter to my scheduled ship date is not even 2 months.

    I'm in Fort Lauderdale.

I really want an 03xx contract but 5800 was my first choice. I changed and they got me the 0300. But forgot to switch my dates. I've got 3 weeks till I ship. Should I pressure them to give me the 0300 or settle for the 5800?

Another words, is it possible that they can pull strings to get me in an 0300 contract??

My big concern is that you'll be settling. If it were me i'd wait a few months if thats what it would take to do what i want.

well, the way i see it, is either one is ok with me. i just prefer the 0300.

What I do want to know is how much combat to MPs see on deployments? I heard that they see a LOT compared to other MOS's because of all their escort and detainment duties. An Army Sgt. I talked with that is an MP said he was constantly outside the wire in combat. He could be blowing smoke or he could just want to sound like he was a warrior. not sure why, he was quite older and seemed over the "glory" or sounding bad ass.

If you really want 0300, wait. Why settle on a job you don't really want just to leave 3-4 months sooner?

Wait for the job you truly want, you WILL regret it. A few months of waiting for 5 years of a contract won't hurt you, you will also enjoy the extra civilian life you have prior to bootcamp.

I thought like you, the "I want to ship ASAP", but when I was in PI MCRD, I was thinking to myself (and yes you will too), "I should've waited that extra few months", or during MP school getting OC sprayed in the face while doing MCMAP.

Ya, but I don't mind MP...its not settling. It was my original choice. Then I decided to go infantry and got all worked up about it. I started thinking about my niece that lives with me and wondering what she would go through if something happened to me, but I got over that quick when I realized its a month until I ship.

I guess MP would be safer. I'll see what the Gunny at our RS has to say tomorrow.

Any input on what MPs do on deployment? how much time do they spend outside the wire? are they just manning checkpoints all day and searching incoming cargo?

from an Fleet MP that has not been deployed I can tell you as far as garrison wise, being an MP is a great job. You work long hours, but you get days off.you might work 12 hours and get the next day or two off. There are alot more positions for advancment and secondary MOS's you can get into (K-9,HMX,CID,etc,etc) I got grunt friends and they say it's a love hate relationship.they love saying there a grunt, but hate BEING one when there not deployed.working parties and standing by are the big parts from what I hear.

Mp's (especially field units) see plenty of combat.it's the MP's who guard and patrol the MSR's and conduct cordon and searches, detainee transports and small unit mounted/dismounted patrols.bread and butter of field MP's is crew served weapons.you'll become extremely well aquainted with the MK19 and 50.cal as well as the 240G. there is no perfect dream MOS,it's all in what you want.If you want action and WANT to see combat go 0300.but if your not deployed, life ain't all that great from what i hear.

Cwalling, have you been to Ft Hase beach at around 0500 and seen the grunts hazing the new boots in full PPE making them climb over the lava rocks and dive into the surf? Its hysterical lol.
