Two Camp Lejeune Marines died in a single-car wreck near Spartanburg, S.C., authorities said.

Pfc. James Edward Writt and Lance Cpl. Robert Joseph Lagassie were killed when Writt lost control of his vehicle on I-26 and struck a tree, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Both Marines were wearing seat belts. Alcohol did not play a role in the crash, a dispatcher with S.C. Highway Patrol said.

Lagassie was assigned to the 22 Marine Expeditionary Unit, said Capt. Clark Carpenter, spokesman for the MEU. Information about Writt could not be released by the Marine Corps due to a next of kin notification situation.

"I can say two Marines from the 22 MEU died in a car crash Saturday near Spartanburg and one of those Marines was Lagassie," Carpenter said.
