We Dont Promise You A Rose Garden

    Hello all,

The Drill instructor in the famous poster (see below) Sgt. Charles A Taliano is heading to Tennessee for a Bone Marrow surgery due to cancer. He needs your prayers, Chuck is a good guy I had the pleasure of meeting him totally by accident. So keep your prayers going for this icon of the Marine Corps he's going to need it. I'll keep you guys updated as more information becomes available to me.

Sorry I didnt follow up with this sooner, actually just saw Chuck last week, and he's up and about as if nothing happened. So I can only assume it went well, he's doing good and is a strong willed individual.

I have been honored to know Chuck for 43 years. He was a DI in our platoon at Parris Island in 66. (2092) We turned out to be an honor platoon that year because of his qualities in the Corps. I thank him for his lessons because they got me through my 13+ months in Viet Nam. For the past few years I have been able to hook up with him on the Island and share stories and good times. He's a Brother to me now and I wish him the best. God Bless and Semper-fi, Mike Theroux

    Charles (Chuck) Taliano Jr.

Charles (Chuck) Taliano Jr. Sgt T (Rose Garden DI) died in his home in the loving arms of his family Friday 4 June 2010. Charles (Chuck) Anthony Taliano Jr. was born Cleveland, Ohio 9 May 1945. After having been educated mostly in parochial schools, he left a small community college and enlisted in the Marine Corps in November 1963, and reported for recruit training at Parris Island, South Carolina in February 1964. Upon completion of basic training and advanced infantry training, PFC Taliano was assigned to 2nd Bn 10th Marines , 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune North Carolina. While serving with Hq Battery, 2/10 Supply, he deployed with Division to Santo Domingo, during the Dominican Republic crisis, in May 1965. Selected for Drill Instructor school, Corporal Taliano completed training and was assigned to Drill Instructor duty, May 1966 at Parris Island. He served with D Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion (same unit he trained with as a recruit) the entire tour, except for a three-month assignment as a drown proofing instructor at the base swimming pool. During April 1968, one of several photos taken of Sergeant Taliano while he was picking up a new Platoon was subsequently used in a Marine Corps recruiting campaign. We Don't Promise You a Rose Garden, the Marines are Looking For a Good Men has become a collector's item. The Rose Garden Drill Instructor and his recruit image remains popular today.

Sergeant Taliano was released from active duty May 1968 and Honorably Discharged from the United States Marine Corps, November 1969, completing his six-year military obligation. During the next thirty-three years, Mr. Taliano held executive sales and marketing positions with several book publishers, including vice-president, sales and marketing Simon & Schuster, Inc., Putnam Publishing Group, E. P. Dutton, Inc., and Grolier Publishing Company. The last six years Taliano was self-employed as an independent contractor in sales and marketing for the publishing and gift product industry. At the end of 2001, Mr. Taliano retired from Publishing, and relocated from New Jersey to the Beaufort, SC area. Mr. Taliano served on the Board of Directors of the Parris Island Historical and Museum Society, and since the end of 2002, he managed the Historical Society Gift Shop. Chuck was a Life Member of the MCL Yellow Footprint Detachment, Beaufort, SC, a member of the MCL Phillip K. Dorn Detachment, Leonardo NJ, a member of the MODD of the Marine Corps League, a PUFL member of the American Legion and the USMC Drill Instructor Association.

Mr. Taliano is survived by his sister Michaelene Taliano of Seven Hills Ohio, two children; daughter, Dr. Kimberly Taliano of Cary, NC and son, Michael Taliano along with daughter-in-law, Danielle and two grandsons, Charles III and Michael James all of Hackettstown, NJ and his former wife, Mercedes Auger of Cary, NC. Family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 8, from 5:30-7:30 at Anderson Funeral Home. A funeral mass was held on Wednesday, June 9, at 10:30am at The Depot Chapel on Parris Island. Burial will be in Beaufort National Cemetery with military honors. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Multiple Myeloma Foundation, 12650 Riverside Dr., Suite 206, N. Hollywood, CA 91607. Anderson Funeral Home is serving the family.

I did not know him or get to meet him.
I am very sorry to have to bring you all this sad news!

Sgt Taliano will certainly be remembered for many years to come, not for battlefield bravery, but for a duty that is equally important - Drill Instructor.

    Requiescat in pace, Marine.

A iconic way to go for a iconic figure of the Marine Corps, he'll be missed. Never met him but I knew that poster well
