Had an old horse named Corkey ... you could be riding along and watching fishing for the bit. Pull the reins one way or the other to keep him from grabbing it. Get a hold of the bit and hang on because you were going for a ride. Us kids used to make haystring bridles and ride him all day with that no problem... get that curb bit clamped in his teeth and he thought he was secretariat. Couldn't even steer the bastard so just duck and hang on.

I used to go to the horse sales in the area and buy anything that didn't make it to the sale chute because of good behavior. Would work and clam them down and resale them. The key was never keep anything over 60 days to make money.
I always bought problem horses. I always say there's not such thing as a problem horse just problem owners.
You just have to become one and put yourself into that horses place and get him to depend on you. I have had some good horses in my life
When I bought Doc who's picture is on my profile pictures nobody had every been able to stay on his back and he had never been ridden out of a round pen. He was eight years old. Bought him on a Friday and took him trail ridding at Biltmore Estate on Saturday. The man I bought him from couldn't be it.
Had some good times with Doc. Sold him to a real Doctor after about a year.

A Friend who lived a mile as the cows go across the pasture or two miles by the road, growing up in Kansas had a couple of old horses they used for herding cattle. One was a big wihite horse with grey specks that was a former border patrol horse, and the other was a young Mare. The Mare had a habit of taking off at a full run, and you just held on for the ride till she got tired. My friend carried a switch off a tree, and whenever she would take off if he was riding her, he would haul off and whack her a good one between the ears. LOL Alot of times that worked but sometimes she would just lock up and send him flying. LOL Awwww the memories.

I used to work for a Gunny who rode bulls in rodeos (his nickname was "Tex". Bet you didn't see that one coming). One of his ankles had been smashed when he was bucked and the bull did a Mexican hat dance on him.
He didn't have to do the three-mile run for PFTs because of that injury. He could do about 1-1/2 miles before his ankle decided to quit. Tex would go to PFTs in Charlies, do 20-pullups, 80-situps, and leave having hardly broke a sweat.

Speaking of Gunny's. We had a Black Gunny that everyone swore that he had punched out a bull with one punch. Never saw it but nobody ever ****ed with him.
Bulkyer people that don't know horse don't realize that something is probably wrong with there teeth when that happens. Just like some horse have back problems when saddled. Although there are some just like us old SOB Marines that just want to get by with what they can.
I've had horse that would buck everyone but me. Just two years ago I used to buy bucking horses that nobody wanted just because they bucked. Don't do that anymore after operations but miss that.
Thanks for the stories. Semper Fi Redman1

Ohh it's intentional on the horses part. That's why I said you can watch them fishing for the bit. Trying to get it set just perfect in their mouth so you can't change their mind with the reins. You'll see em keep trying to switch it over to be able to bite down on the bar. Yea redman1 ... I had no idea what floating teeth was either when I was young. Some horses just enjoy taking off like a scalded dog and the way to get way with it was grabbing the bit.

I worked at this yard in s.w. kansas and this cowboy was riding his horse and he wasn't doing what the cowboy wanted him to do. the horse kept raring up on him and the other cowboys said your holding your reins to tight . he used some choice word to them and his horse kept raring up finnaly he got a 2x4 and when the horse rared up he rain down with the 2x4 and damn near killed the horse I thought. he put one eye out and cut his head open a little. after that he rode just fine , never saw the horse rare up any more after that.
