One fall i was day working for the Murphy Ranch out of Paisley. They ran a modest bunch of animals up in 'Sycan' or Fremont National Forest. Most of the grazeable land was leased to the ZX Ranch and they would truck their beef down, but Murph couldn't make that work on paper so he trailed his cut out of the high country.
It was down hill 3 1/2 days and maybe 3 or 4 of the older mother cows just fell over and died pretty quick, he said that was the average toll. Doc said constant gravity pushed and constricted their vital organs until they just couldn't stand it.

I had an old hound that was a pretty steady dog. Treed a lot of coons and I usually ran pups with him. Went out one night and opened the dog box and he come flying out of there like the house was on fire. Leash and all he was gone in a flash. We had done the drill of stand on the tailgate and wait till I put on the tracking collar then get lead to the area I wanted hunted so many times this was really strange. Had a great big booming mouth could be heard for miles. I guess he was running speed beef or a bobcat or something. I walked then drove for a couple hours and never could cut him off. I finally said to hell with you .... see ya in the morning. I got up at daylight and drove down where I had turned him out. I started calling his name and heard a whine. I walked all the way around the pond and back and said where the hell are you? Nother whine. I looked everywhere. Even looked under the truck. Drove the other side of the corn field and called his name. Nother whine.
Finally I heard his tail thumping on the inside of the dog box. A friend of mine had caught him early in the morning and just swung by my house and stuck him in my dog box. I had been driving around and calling till way past breakfast looking for a dog that was in the back of my truck the whole time.
His all nighter caused him to hunt a little closer after that.

Evening Cowboy Marines,
Thanks for the stories, we never know what you'll get on here but its always interesting.
Just got in and fed all the animals and everyone is doing good. Even the mud is drying up. Not Camp Muddy now.
Our two hens are laying really good now and were enjoying fresh eggs.
Had baby back ribs tonight for supper before I get my four last teeth cut out tomorrow. I'll be glad when its done.
I'm finally in the VA hosp records now and will start getting my meds in the mail. Its been a long haul and I appreciate all the support.
MCVET said something about virtual horse back riding. I DON'T THINK SO! If you can't have the hands on with a horse and the friendship it brings along with the feeding and smells it wouldn't be the same.

Morning Cowboy Marines,
Bulky that's pretty funny packing your dog around while looking for him.
There's nothing like when I wake up in the morning and draw back the shades and look out and Cody is standing at the gate ready to be fed. Being able to look out and see Cody only 20 feet from the house is good. Then hearing the chickens out of the back door who are in the other barn about 100 feet from the house.

Tiger.
Way back, around 1960, We had a half German Shepard, half Collie, my kids named Tiger. Tiger was almost as big, as a Great Dane, but he had the look of a the Shepard. I was asked, by a number of people, if I'd sell him. I asked, if they wanted to buy my four Kids too. Tiger was family. A friend of my wife's was visiting us one day, with her little three year old daughter, and the little girl was out in the yard playing with our kids. Tiger laid sleeping under a tree, near the kids, as always, when the little girl ran over, and jumped on top of him. The Mother screamed, and started to run out, to rescue her daughter, and I ran out to stop her. She got outside, and stopped. She saw Tiger lift his head, wag his tail, and wash the little girls face with his tongue. She grabbed his ears, and pulled on them. My daughter, Janice, helped her onto Tigers back, and He stood up, and gave her a ride around the yard. The lady watched for a minute, then came back into the house. She and her daughter, became regular visitors that summer, Just so the little girl could ride Tiger. We didn't mind, because we had neighborhood kids there every day, playing. Little kids rode Tiger, bigger kids wrestled him. The penalty for losing a match, was a big, sloppy facewash, and Tiger, always won.

Morning Cowboy Marines,
Ken thanks for the story about Tiger and its good to see you on here more often because your missed when your not here.
Thanks to all of you for making Cowboy Up a good place to hang your hat and remember the good times in your life.
I know its called Cowboy Up and was started about my horses but all of you have made it a place to reflect on your good times with all animals and that's what life is all about.
The stars on Cowboy Up are Montana, Slinger Dunn, SDK who have mostly the cowboy life I wish I had.
Of course the rest of you along with me are stars also but were not so much Cowboys anymore.
By the way all my animals are doing fine and Cody acts younger everyday but just a friend and yard ornament. Its hard not having any riding horses anymore and if my work don't pick up I won't ever have anymore.
Happy Trails To Everyone

http://www.fiddlebackranch.net/ I packed dudes and hunters for this guy shortly after my EAS and now it appears his outfit is for sale: lock, stock and barrel chested hosses. An explorer can open a couple gates on that place, cross a river and ride WSW through the Shoshone Absaroka's and Teton National forest clear over to Jackson Hole or south to the Wind River Range if your up for it. Or strike out WNW for Yellowstone. Best to have fresh shod ponies cuz it is double tough on hooves and dudes. That entire country is infested with game.

Thanks for sharing and letting me dream.
