NH National Guard sergeant gets bronze star

January 30, 2009

LACONIA, N.H. --A New Hampshire National Guard sergeant has been awarded the Bronze Star for reportedly staying and fighting a battle after his vehicle had deployed.

Sgt. Hoon Nowack of Laconia, N.H., says he was just doing his job and brushed the honor off as just another medal. Nowack returned home to his family a few weeks ago after a yearlong tour of duty in Afghanistan.

Nowack has served in the military for six years, first serving with the U.S. Marines in the Persian Gulf and in Iraq in 2005.

Nowack grew up in Meredith and Sanbornton where he graduated from Winnisquam Regional High School. He currently works at the National Guard office in Concord.
