SACRAMENTO, CA -- A former Marine learned Monday that he will spend the next year in the Sacramento County jail.

Victor Sanchez-Millan, 24, pleaded no contest in October to two felony counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor and two misdemeanor counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Sanchez-Millan was a sergeant who also worked as a recruiter in Roseville, according to Sacramento County District Attorney Jan Scully. Last April he befriended a Lincoln High School junior at a job fair after she expressed interest in the Marines. He was 23 at the time. The victim was 17.

Prosecutors said the friendship turned into a two-month-long sexual relationship. Sanchez-Millan took the girl out on dates and a hotel while in uniform and drove his government vehicle.

According to the district attorney's office, the victim's parents thought she was attending official recruiting events. Sanchez-Millan was arrested in August.

Deputy District Attorney Caryn Dubke could not comment on how authorities learned of the abuse, but said in a news release that Sanchez-Millan "grossly violated a position of trust. His abuse of power devastated the lives of the victim, her family and the defendant's own family."

Sanchez-Millan was also sentenced to five years probation. He will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

As part of the plea deal, separate charges in Placer County were dismissed.

According to an official with the U.S. Marine Corps., Sanchez-Millan was separated from the Marines, but was not dishonorably discharged. A Marine can only be dishonorably discharged as a result of a court-martial.
